Triengen brings together the history of technology, sacred architecture and experiences in nature. The Tower Clock Technology Museum focuses on mechanical tower clocks; the chapels in Wellnau and Kulmerau, as well as the Church of Saint Naum of Ohrid, offer different cultural perspectives. The Fusion Trail provides another way to discover the area: at 30.32 kilometres, it is a longer hike of moderate difficulty. There are also scenic flights and skydives at Flying-Ranch Triengen. When planning, you can decide whether you want your stay to focus more on technology, architecture, nature or an activity in the air.
Tower Clocks and Traditional Craftsmanship
The Tower Clock Technology Museum was inaugurated in 2007 as Switzerland’s first museum of tower clock technology. It displays more than 75 mechanical tower clocks dating from the 16th to the 20th century. The collection combines a clearly defined field of technology with a broad historical scope: you can view individual pieces within the context of an era or look across several centuries. This combination of specialised technological history and historical depth makes the museum a distinctive highlight in Triengen.
At Muff Kirchturmtechnik, a guided tour adds traditional craftsmanship to the theme: visitors can see how bell clappers are shaped using the art of blacksmithing. Check the booking arrangements separately if you plan to take this tour.
Chapels and Their History
The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Wellnau is late Gothic and was built between 1591 and 1593. Its rare features include wood panelling, an gallery balustrade and pews, along with an early Baroque chancel arch crucifix. During renovations in 1986, fragments of frescoes depicting a Crucifixion scene were uncovered in the choir. The construction date and the discovery mark two distinct stages: the chapel was built in the late 16th century, while the frescoes only came to light during a later renovation.
The Chapel of St Christina in Kulmerau is protected as a federal and cantonal monument. It was first mentioned in 1524. Together with the Chapel of the Holy Cross, it offers a different perspective on cultural heritage: here, the focus is on its first recorded mention and protected status, while in Wellnau, the furnishings and uncovered fresco fragments draw the eye.
The Church of Saint Naum of Ohrid
The Church of Saint Naum of Ohrid is the only Macedonian Orthodox church in Switzerland. The building is in a traditional style and has a freestanding bell tower. If you approach Triengen from the north along a field path, you can see the church from afar. This northern approach gives you a clear landmark before you reach the village.
Hiking the Fusion Trail
The Fusion Trail is 30.32 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. It passes through forests, along streams and across meadows with diverse flora and fauna. The route includes four signposted viewing platforms, one in each district. Its length and difficulty are important factors to consider when planning; the scenery and platforms give the trail its distinctive character.
The Fusion Trail is considered a family hike and is suitable for pushchairs in some sections. So, while it is family-oriented, the entire trail is not fully accessible with a pushchair. As trail conditions can vary, check them before setting off.
