Tärnaby offers several distinct reasons to stay: skiing off-piste at Laxfjället, hiking to Geavhtavaartoe/Gäutafjället, Sámi culture at Aejlies, and Tärna Church. There is also the Ingemartrofén, an international alpine youth competition. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide whether mountain sports, scenery, culture or an event date will be your main focus.

Skiing and hiking with different focuses

Skiing off-piste is possible at Laxfjället. The summit is 829 metres above sea level, can be reached via trails from several directions, and offers a 360-degree panoramic view. Laxfjället therefore offers both a specific skiing opportunity and a summit destination defined by its elevation, access routes and panorama.

A hiking trail leads from Tärnaby to Geavhtavaartoe/Gäutafjället, within walking distance. It passes through coniferous forest and mountain birch forest before continuing through alpine terrain. The trail is characterised not only by its destination, but also by the changes in vegetation and terrain. Trail conditions vary by season; take this into account when planning.

The two mountain experiences differ mainly in their focus: at Geavhtavaartoe, the hike is shaped by a trail through several landscape zones, while at Laxfjället, the emphasis is on the summit's elevation, panoramic views and several routes to the top. This lets you choose between a hike through changing terrain and a summit destination with panoramic views.

Sámi culture and Tärna Church

Aejlies is a contemporary Sámi cultural institution in Tärnaby that organises public programmes. This adds a contemporary cultural theme to the landscape and sporting activities. If you are interested in Sámi culture, Aejlies offers a distinct cultural focus for your trip planning.

Tärna Church is in Tärnaby and offers views of Lake Gäutan and Ryfjället. The present-day church was consecrated by Bishop Olof Bergqvist on 19 July 1908. Its old altar arrangement was made by local craftspeople from wood and soapstone. The consecration gives the present-day church a specific historical connection; the altar arrangement adds a local craft element and highlights the materials used.

The cultural experiences also differ in their relationship to time: Aejlies is a contemporary Sámi institution with public programmes, while Tärna Church offers a historical and artistic perspective through its consecration date and handcrafted altar arrangement.

Ingemartrofén and event dates

A report dated 24 October 2024 states that Tärnaby and Tärna IK Fjällvinden have been responsible for the Ingemartrofén for many years. It describes the international alpine youth competition as an annual event and says that 200 to 300 young people come to Tärnaby each year. If you are planning a stay around the Ingemartrofén, check the specific event dates separately.
