Grannäs is the halfway point on the second day of the Storuman Gravel route. Spruce forest characterises the landscape; there are also meadows and farmland in the surrounding area. A swimming area and historic architectural features offer further practical details for planning your trip.

Stages and trails

The Jippmokks kapell in Grannäs is located at kilometre 345 of the Storuman Gravel route. It is a shelter intended exclusively for emergencies. On Storuman Gravel XL, there is also a shorter section near Grannäs, about 1 km long, along an off-road trail rather than a regular road. The route may change between editions, so check the details for the edition you are following. The kilometre marker 345 indicates the route position, not the length of the off-road section.

The nearby starting point for the Gippmokkhobben Trail is on the winding gravel road between Ullisjaure and Harrvik. A sign indicates 1 km to the summit. The hike is short and steep in places; in good visibility, the panoramic views extend across mountain peaks, forests and lakes. This gives you both a clearly identified route stage and a hike with a marked destination to consider when planning.

Landscape and cultural connections

A bakehouse with half-timbering dating from the mid-19th century stands on property 1:17 in Grannäs. The porch features carved details. A 2001 archaeological report identifies the area around the lakes Grannäs and Ullisjaur as an important Sámi settlement area. It is also passed down orally that many Sámi in Vapsten have their roots in the Grannäs and Ullisjaur area; this information was recorded in 2001.

Swimming area in Grannäs

The swimming area in Grannäs has a jetty, a wind shelter and benches. Facilities also include a fire pit and firewood. These specific features distinguish the waterfront from the landscape and cultural connections of the area.

The Gippmokksjöarna

The Gippmokksjöarna area comprises three lakes: Inre Gippmokksjön, Yttre Gippmokksjön and Västra Gippmokksjön. The Gippmokksjöarna are home to trout, char, perch and whitefish. Small boats can be launched at the swimming area there. The fishing waters include jointly used waters belonging to Grannäs skiftelslag, as well as leased areas.

In winter, the western and outer Gippmokksjön can be reached by walking or skiing across the ice. Buföringsviken is the starting point for the western Gippmokksjön; the swimming area is the starting point for the outer Gippmokksjön. Access depends on safe ice and snow conditions. When planning, it is therefore important to consider both the destination and its associated starting point.
