Västerbotten stretches from the east coast on the Gulf of Bothnia to the Norwegian border in the west. The northern part, between Sorsele and Skellefteå, belongs to Swedish Lapland. Coasts, lakes, mountains, valleys and deep forests define the region – providing different settings for hiking, nature experiences and cultural discoveries.

Hiking trails through varied landscapes

The Kungsleden runs between Ammarnäs and Hemavan through the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. There are five STF-operated mountain huts along this section. Hut services and access may vary seasonally; before setting out, also check the latest information about trails and bridges.

The Lapplandsleden connects Borgafjäll and Hemavan over 190 kilometres and is a ski and hiking trail. A tent is needed for multi-day hikes because the huts are far apart. There are four overnight huts along the trail: Arevattnet, Åtnikstugan, Tjåkkelestugan and Slipsikstugan. The two routes therefore offer different guidance for planning: five staffed mountain huts are listed along the Kungsleden section, while the large distances between huts on the Lapplandsleden mean a tent is necessary for multi-day hikes. Check current conditions before setting out.

In Björnlandet National Park, the focus is on hilly forest landscapes and valuable old-growth forest; the oldest pine trees are over 500 years old. Several marked hiking trails and two overnight huts provide access to the park. Here, too, seasonal conditions may affect facilities.

At Atoklimpen, landscapes and Sámi history come together. The cultural landscape shows how the nomadic reindeer-herding society used the area from prehistoric times to the present day. A trail just under nine kilometres long circles the mountain and has several information boards. The summit of Atoklimpen consists of peridotite, a volcanic rock that is resistant to weathering and can, among other things, be transformed into serpentinite. Because of the heavy metals in serpentinite and the nutrient-poor surroundings, only a few plant species can survive there.

Coast, island trails and rivers

At Bjuröklubb, you can hike over rock slabs and through sand dunes. An eight-kilometre trail crosses Svarthällorna; near Grundskatan are Storsandsbankarna, Västerbotten’s longest sand dunes. An accessible ramp leads to the lighthouse. You can stop for refreshments in the lighthouse keeper’s house; check seasonal offerings before your visit.

Holmöarnas Nature Reserve is accessible by ferry and has several hiking trails. Check the current ferry timetable before travelling. On Holmön and Ängesön, quiet gravel roads are suitable for cycling; there is a bicycle rental in Byviken in summer. Hiking and cycling can thus be enjoyed as different ways to explore the islands, without combining them into a set route.

Rivers also offer different perspectives. At Vindelforsarna, a marked trail takes about an hour to circle the reserve, following both banks of the river and passing several rest areas. The area is close to the Vindeln travel centre, which is accessible by bus and train; check current timetables before travelling. Route 363, a road trip route through Västerbotten, passes rushing rivers and extensive forests and connects visitors with local food producers. At the Mårdsele rapids, you can explore wooden bridges and well-marked trails.

Culture, history and seasonal experiences

The Västerbottens museum in Umeå works throughout Västerbotten County and presents the region’s cultural heritage through exhibitions, programmes and educational activities. It is one of Sweden’s 24 county museums and Gammlia is accessible by public transport, car, bicycle or on foot. The Gammlia open-air museum includes around 30 buildings relocated there from different parts of Västerbotten. They show what the region used to look like and how people lived in the past. Summer events include Midsummer celebrations and dance evenings; check the current dates.

Umeå hosts Sámi Week, also called Ubmejen Biejvieh, every year in February or March. Activities include tastings and joik singing competitions; check dates and the programme before travelling. The Umedalen Sculpture Park offers another form of public art: it is open year-round and admission is free. Check for current information about possible exceptions before your visit.

In Skellefteå, Bonnstan is a well-preserved collection of wooden houses. It has remained largely unchanged since it was built in the first half of the 19th century. For winter sports, Kittelfjäll offers several ski runs for snowboarding and alpine skiing; check current operating conditions before travelling. Svedjan Cheese is made in the village of the same name, and summer is the suggested time to visit. You can also visit a cheese exhibition at the Burträsk Experience Center.
