Åskilje is located on the E12 between Lycksele and Storuman. At Åskilje, the Juktån flows into the Umeälven; Åskilje kyrka adds a clearly dated construction history to this river geography. This means that the road location, waterways and architecture provide concrete points of reference for a stay. You can decide which of these should shape your stay by comparing them with your travel interests and the number of nights available.

River Landscape and Nature

The Juktån rises in Lake Överst-Juktan in the mountains between Tärnaby and Ammarnäs and flows southeast to its mouth in the Umeälven at Åskilje. Its location on the E12 between Lycksele and Storuman places Åskilje on the road map; the Juktån provides a second geographical point of reference that can be followed from its source to its mouth.

The Juktån is considered a classic fly-fishing river. If you are interested in fishing here, check the local fishing regulations and access arrangements before your visit. The nearby Buberget Nature Reserve is in the Åskilje area and can be reached from the E12 at Åskilje. As well as the river, a protected area nearby offers a distinct landscape to explore.

The Construction History of Åskilje kyrka

Construction of Åskilje kyrka began in 1925 and was completed in 1927–1928; the church was consecrated in 1928. It was originally designed as a simple chapel. The floor plan comprised a rectangular nave, a lower and narrower entrance porch to the northwest, and a small sacristy to the east. The description thus distinguishes the main space from the two additional parts of the building.

In 1936, a bell tower was added to the northwest after the entrance porch had been demolished. The plans were drawn up by Einar Lundberg, an architect with the Swedish National Board of Public Building. The tower therefore belongs to a later construction phase, not to the original chapel design. For architecture enthusiasts, this provides a clear sequence from the start of construction and the consecration to the changes made in 1936. Another dated local point of interest is the bridges in Åskilje, which came second in 2013 with 1,264 votes.
