Bygdsiljum lies at the southeastern corner of Lake Bygdeträsket. There is plenty to explore during a stay, from downhill biking and cycling to paddling, fishing, church art and mining history. You can choose what to focus on based on the activities and places that interest you most.
Cycling: downhill trails and a route
Bygdsiljumsbacken Bike Park offers downhill trails rated from easy green to very difficult black. The range of difficulty ratings can help you find your way, but may change. Check the current classifications before you ride.
A cycling route created by Skellefteå Kraft runs from the ski slope towards Andersvattnet; its details may evolve. While the bike park focuses on trail difficulty, the direction towards Andersvattnet is the key point of reference for this route.
The bike park is about an hour’s drive from both Umeå and Skellefteå. Actual travel time varies depending on conditions, so treat this as a rough guide for planning your journey.
On the water: river, lake and fishing waters
From the canoe bridge in Bygdsiljum, you can paddle for several kilometres through a forest landscape on the Rickleån. Kayaks and boats can be rented from Destination 7:14 to explore the Rickleån and Stora Bygdeträsket from Bygdsiljum. Operator details may change; check the latest information before making plans.
There are different options for choosing between river and lake: on the Rickleån, you can paddle for several kilometres through a forest landscape, while the rental service also lists Stora Bygdeträsket as a place to explore.
Stora Bygdeträskets Fiskevårdsområde offers sport fishing in a variety of waters, from small streams to Stora Bygdeträsket. This means there is a choice of waters ranging from streams to the lake. Rules and permits may change; check the current conditions before fishing.
Church art and mining history
Bygdsiljums kyrka is home to the choir window “Skapelsen” by artist Stig Carlsson. The altarpiece was painted by Gerda Höglund and shows Jesus calling his disciples. The two works have different points of focus: the window has its own title, while the altarpiece centres on the biblical scene it depicts.
Bygdsiljum is partly included in the area of national cultural heritage interest around Bygdeträsket (AC 18). Mining is also part of the area’s history: the mining remains at Gruvberget are near the school and are signposted. The iron mine and ironworks in Bygdsiljum are probably the oldest in Västerbotten.
