Skellefteå combines a tangible cultural history with trails through town and countryside. Bonnstan has 116 church cottages with a total of 392 rooms; along the coast, cliffs, deep bays, small natural beaches, and harbours shape the landscape. There are also trails, museums, and places where you can explore crafts, natural science, or former working life.

Church Town, Museums and Industrial History

Bonnstan is one of the few preserved church towns in Sweden. As early as the 17th century, it served people from the surrounding villages as a gathering place and overnight stop. An annual church festival weekend, a market, and a traditional Midsummer celebration are held here. Check the event dates before your trip.

Nordanå has more than 700 years of history; it is home to the Skellefteå Museum, a regional cultural history museum. Handens hus hosts activities for children, craft gatherings, and activity days centred on crafts and handicrafts. Specific programme details may change. Stackgrönnans Båtmuseum, meanwhile, displays working boats from an era when boats were used as tools of work and the main means of transport.

The cultural history trail in Örviken offers a different perspective on the past. It leads to historic sites from the periods of the sawmill, which operated from 1896 to 1904, and the sulphite factory, which operated from 1906 to 1947. These two periods help put the different phases of industrial history into context.

On Foot Through Town and Countryside

Hälsans stig is a seven-kilometre walking trail along the river through central Skellefteå. It runs from Älvsbackabron in the east to Lejonströmsbron in the west. The two bridges provide clear points of reference along the route through town.

Two trails with different focuses start at Vitberget. Mineralleden begins at the illuminated Vitberget ski trail in the centre and runs through varied landscapes to Skellefteå AdventurePark and Varuträsk Vildmarksgruva. The five-kilometre Naturstigen trail crosses hilly terrain, with a few short, steeper sections. Information boards along the way cover landscape, culture, and geology.

Eight hiking trails start at Kalvträsk Vildmarkscamp and lead through hilly forest landscapes. The Bjuröklubb hiking trail is a 6.2-kilometre loop; you can also walk just half the route. More than 120 kilometres of cross-country ski trails are groomed in the municipality each winter. Check the current grooming status before setting out.

Coast and Seasonal Nature Experiences

Skellefteå Municipality has a 531-kilometre coastline. Along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, high cliffs, deep bays, small natural beaches, and harbours shape the landscape. Bjuröklubb, a 919-hectare nature reserve and Natura 2000 site, is also located in the municipality.

Seasonal bird migration can be observed at the Bjuröklubb lighthouse site. In April in particular, large numbers of birds of prey, cranes, swans, geese, and small birds head north. The exact timing of the migration may vary, so don’t plan your visit around a fixed date alone.

Underground, at the Art Site and in the Science Centre

At Varuträsk Vildmarksgruva, you can take a self-guided underground tour with borrowed protective equipment. Afterwards, visitors can search for minerals and rare stones above ground in the Mineral Park. Check booking and access information in advance; access details for the mine may also change seasonally.

Wasteland is in Ursviken, where the Skellefteälven flows into the sea. A former industrial site has been transformed into a destination for art, movement, and sauna culture. The main attraction is the Crystal Sauna, a sauna and art installation by the duo Bigert & Bergström. Check access and booking information for Wasteland before your trip.

At Exploratoriet, families and the general public can explore technology and natural science through hands-on activities across 800 square metres and three floors. Interactive stations invite visitors to try experiments, solve challenges, and explore how different phenomena work. At Sara Kulturhus, architecture adds to the visitor experience: it is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. Tours are offered in Swedish and English, last about 45 minutes, and end in the exhibition hall, which you can then explore independently. Check tour dates and times in advance.

Local Cuisine and Practical Information

At Lappvik, stories about the place, its people, and the seasons are shared in a personal, small-scale farming setting. Meals are also prepared using local ingredients, often sourced directly from the farm. Seasonal availability may change. Lövånger Saluhall is a market hall and shop near the E4 between Umeå and Skellefteå, where you can buy locally produced food and small-scale handicraft products. Nordanågårdens Bistro serves carefully prepared dishes inspired by classic flavours and Swedish food traditions.

Buses connect Skellefteå’s districts with nearby villages and other places in the surrounding area. Routes and timetables may change; check them before travelling. Standard bicycles can be rented at Cykel och Fiskecenter for exploring Skellefteå. Check the availability of bike rentals in advance.
