A 2.3-metre-high church tower weathercock, Rijfska gården and the prayer garden “Bönens trädgård” show just how varied Kusmark’s themes are: church architecture, rural farm heritage and a garden concept that expresses the rosary Frälsarkransen through colours, shapes, scents and tastes. There is also the child-friendly swimming spot Pölen. You can group the themes to help you choose: the church and Rijfska gården represent different periods of construction, while the garden and swimming spot offer contrasting points of interest.

The church and a distinctive detail

Kusmarks kyrka is also called Kågedalens kyrka; both names refer to the same religious building. It is a representative example of 1920s church architecture. Its tower features a 2.3-metre-high weathercock, which has local historical significance and is said to be the largest in Sweden. This brings together the architectural style of a particular period and the story of a single detail. The church thus connects its place in time with the distinctive history of one of its features.

Rijfska gården and its building heritage

Rijfska gården was built in 1793 by farmer and municipal councillor Olof Persson and was designated a listed building on 24 September 1979. Its buildings are the only surviving secular stone houses from the 18th century in Västerbottens län. “Secular” means non-religious and distinguishes these buildings from sacred architecture. The two themes also belong to different periods: the church is a representative example of the 1920s, while the surviving stone houses date from the 18th century. The dates mark distinct milestones: 1793 is the year of construction, and 24 September 1979 is the date of the listing. This makes it possible to place the church and the rural stone heritage in their respective periods.

Prayer garden and fika

The prayer garden “Bönens trädgård” expresses the rosary Frälsarkransen through colours, shapes, scents and tastes. Colours and shapes complement scents and tastes; unlike the church and farm, the religious theme here is conveyed through several design elements. The seasonal café Pärlan is right next to the garden and is recommended as a place to enjoy a Swedish fika break. Check current opening days before your trip.

Agricultural landscape and potatoes

Kusmark is an old farming village set in a fertile agricultural landscape. Its soil has long been considered particularly well suited to growing high-quality potatoes in Skellefteå. The potato gives Kusmark’s agricultural character a tangible link to cultivation and adds another facet to its rural heritage alongside its building history.

Swimming spot and seasonal pitches

Pölen is Kusmark’s child-friendly swimming spot, located just below the school. From 1 May to 31 October, Folkets Hus offers pitches for caravans and motorhomes. These details help with different planning questions: Pölen identifies a swimming spot and its location, while the pitch offer is defined by its seasonal dates. If you are travelling by caravan or motorhome, check this period before planning your trip.
