If you’re choosing between historic church architecture, a 17th-century church town and birdwatching at Gärdefjärden, Lövånger offers a range of options for your stay. The church, museum and nature sit alongside cycle routes and practical information to help you find your way around.
Church, church town and museum
Construction of Lövånger Church began in the 15th century; it was probably brought into use in 1507. It is made mostly of grey natural stone, while the surrounds and vaults contain brick. The church town tells the story of a different period: it is one of Sweden’s oldest surviving church towns and dates back to the 17th century. It has a total of 117 church cottages and numerous stable buildings. The cottages themselves date back to the mid-17th century.
Immediately north of the old stone church, Lövångers Hembygdsförening runs a museum in a Västerbotten farmhouse. Exhibits include a 1913 Adler automobile and an exhibition about blacksmiths from the surrounding area. The upper floor is devoted to clockmaking, shoemaking, tanning, photography and dairy farming; there is also a historic classroom. The museum thus complements the buildings around the church with insights into crafts, work and everyday school life. Check opening hours before your visit.
Lillkyrkan can also be included in a visit to the church area: it is open whenever the church is open. Children may visit only when accompanied by an adult. Check in advance whether the church is open if you plan to visit.
Birdwatching at Gärdefjärden
Gärdefjärden is a lake rich in birdlife, set in a valuable cultural landscape. During the spring and autumn migrations, the area is an important stopover for birds. Facilities include walking trails and rest areas, as well as a birdwatching tower and several viewpoints. There is also a birdwatching hide and a platform; each offers views across the lake. The spring and autumn migration seasons give the nature experience a seasonal focus.
Lövånger bus station is very close to the nature reserve. The entrance to the area is accessible via the church town and Soldattorpet in Lövånger. If you’re looking for another nature destination nearby, visit Bjuröklubb Nature Reserve. It is characterised by its landscape and history, and features a lighthouse and winding trails with sea views. Three hiking trails are marked there; one is a 6.2-kilometre circular route.
Cycle routes and other places to visit
There are also several options for cycling: Lövånger has six cycle routes of varying lengths. The Bölerundan cycle route, also known as Bruna spåret, is 18 kilometres long and has several rest stops. The specific distance and rest facilities make it easy to consider this route as a trip in its own right, distinct from the shorter or longer alternatives.
The nearby Lappvik farm is another option for a visit with children or adults; the experience there is suitable for both age groups. Check the booking arrangements before you travel. At Lövånger Saluhall, you can buy locally produced food and artisan products. Check current opening hours and visitor arrangements before your visit. This makes it possible to prioritise culture, nature and local offerings according to your interests, without having to fit every activity into the same day’s itinerary.
