The Sydostleden runs directly through Väckelsång; finds also point to a settlement tradition dating back at least to the Neolithic period. This offers two different ways to plan a trip: a cycling route through the village and historic traces at the church, local history museum and in the history of local production. Åsnen is a separate attraction a few kilometres away.
Cycling and Outdoor Activities in Väckelsång
In Sweden, the Sydostleden is designated cycling route number 2. It runs directly through Väckelsång. The section from Lidhem south towards Tingsryd is paved, making for a comfortable and safe bike ride without competing car traffic. It is worth checking the current route conditions before setting out.
The Väckelsångsrundan runs mostly along smaller paved roads; a short section follows a cycle path closed to car traffic. The ICA in Väckelsång is suggested as a starting point. The two route descriptions differ in the features they highlight: for the Sydostleden, they focus on the paved section towards Tingsryd and the traffic conditions; for the Rundan, they describe the route along smaller roads and a short cycle path closed to cars.
The Väckelsång exercise trail starts at the Björkvalla sports field. An activity circuit around the trail has signs showing various movement and training exercises. So, alongside the cycling routes described, the local outdoor activity options also include signposted exercises.
Åsnen and Ursjöbadet
Lake Åsnen is 3 kilometres from Väckelsång. Its inland archipelago comprises 1,000 islands, and its shoreline is more than 700 kilometres long.
A few kilometres west of Väckelsång, on Åsnen, is Ursjöbadet, a bathing spot with a jetty, changing cabins, toilets, a playground, a barbecue area and parking. This describes the facilities at the site; check which ones are currently available before your visit.
Church, Museum and Local History
In Väckelsång Church, a gilded royal crown on the southeast gable commemorates the foundation stone laid by Crown Prince Oscar. The altarpiece was painted by Captain Salomon Andersson in 1829. The dedication below identifies Crown Prince Oscar as the donor of the painting that same year. These details distinguish the church’s construction history from its furnishings: the crown commemorates the foundation stone, while the painter and dedication relate to the altarpiece.
The old church was demolished in 1828. An examination of its remains uncovered the foundations in 1976. Väckelsångs Hembygdsgård is a local history museum in a former inn, a few hundred metres from Route 27. The building houses an old school museum; the grounds also include an Iron Age burial ground with 46 burial mounds.
Local production history is also associated with a specific name: the Arla cow was manufactured at the Lek i Trä factory in Väckelsång in batches of 5,000. The factory was founded by three brothers. The present main building of Lidhem manor was built in 1798. Together, these details illustrate different aspects of the village’s history—from archaeological traces and church art to production and architecture.
