Urshult combines local history with the southern landscape around Lake Åsnen. Urshults kyrka stands beside Kyrkviken on the lake’s southern shore; on the Sydostleden, Urshult marks the southernmost point of Åsnen, the largest lake in Kronoberg County. Traditional orchards, a bathing area and routes with different characteristics add to the area’s cultural appeal. Local history, cultural landscape and outdoor activity therefore offer distinct themes to explore when planning a visit.
Church and Local History
In 1891, church painter Ludvig Frid created an extensive interior for Urshults kyrka. Sockenstugan Urshult is a local history museum beside the church at the western entrance to Urshult. The building served for a century as a school in Urshult and as a meeting place. Well-preserved church stables stand beside Sockenstugan. Here, different aspects of local history come together: the church’s interior, the museum building’s former use and the church stables as historic buildings.
Traditional Orchards and Cultural Landscape
Traditional orchard farming has a longer history in Urshult than in many other parts of the country. Traditional orchards can still be found on several farms in the surrounding area. Since 2015, the orchard area around Urshult has been designated a cultural environment of national interest. The designation and the surviving orchards shed light on different aspects of the same cultural landscape: its official recognition and its continued presence on several farms. Those drawn to Urshult for its landscape history will find another local point of interest here alongside the historic buildings.
Bathing Area and Activities on the Water
Rävabacken bathing area is at Urshult Camping, right on the shore of Lake Åsnen. It has a bathing jetty, changing rooms, toilets, a barbecue area and a sandy beach. Urshult Camping also offers boat and canoe rentals; availability may depend on the season. Swimming and boating or canoeing are different ways to enjoy time by the water. If renting is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is available during your travel dates.
Routes and Getting There
Urshults elljusspår is a 2.4 km illuminated exercise trail with two loops. The northern loop is 1.1 km long and the southern one is 1.3 km, making their lengths easy to compare. The trail starts at the Urdavallen sports ground in Urshult. Åsnen Runt offers a different kind of route: almost half of it is traffic-free, running along former railway embankments. Whereas the elljusspår is described in terms of its two loop lengths, Åsnen Runt is distinguished by its traffic-free sections along the former embankments.
Roads 27 and 29 from Blekinge, and Road 120 via Tingsryd, Urshult and Sirkön, lead to Åsnen National Park. Check road conditions before setting out.
