Huseby Bruk ends its season with a nine-day Christmas fair in November, considered the largest in the Nordic countries. Dates and programme vary from year to year. Huseby Bruk includes a manor house in a historic industrial setting, a park, a garden and a restaurant; the entire site is protected as a listed building. Guided tours, exhibitions and educational activities complement the visit, though seasonal programmes may vary.
Stories, Glass and Cultural History
In Sagobygden, the Sagomuseet is the centrepiece: stories and legends about trolls, the Näcken and the forest woman come to life there. You can explore them on your own or with a storytelling guide. Sagobygden’s music and storytelling festival is also part of the cultural tradition. It is held annually and began in 1990; dates and programme vary from year to year.
Smålands museum is Sweden’s oldest provincial museum. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions explore Kronoberg’s cultural history in the past, present and future. At Sveriges glasmuseum in Växjö, Swedish glass is uniquely combined with glass art, history and culture. The museum traces the development of Swedish glass from the earliest times to contemporary studio glass. The exhibitions at The House of Emigrants tell the story of the great wave of emigration to America in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Crafts and Historic Sites
Lessebo handpappersbruk received the right to manufacture paper in 1719. Today, paper is still made from rags in a stone building dating from 1897. Visitors can often watch the papermaking process and buy paper in the shop; this may depend on operating hours. The early right to produce paper and the papermaking that continues today thus mark two distinct points in time.
Linné’s Råshult is a cultural reserve in Småland and the birthplace of Carl von Linné, who was born there in 1707. Visitors can follow paths through pastures and meadows, experience historic farming methods and traditional plants, and visit a museum and join guided tours. Guided tours may be seasonal. The garden café serves a vegetarian buffet prepared mainly with organic ingredients; the café may also operate seasonally.
At Kånna högar, there are 240 burial mounds, a stone-built burial mound, 17 stone settings, two stone circles, an Iron Age dolmen and 30 standing stones. The variety of forms makes the site a special stop for anyone interested in historic sites.
