Älmeboda combines architectural history and local remembrance with a choice for your day trip: you can focus on churches and history or plan a longer bike ride. The church ruin, Älmeboda kyrka and the memorial stone “Peststenen” represent different aspects of local and parish history. The approximately 85-kilometre tour “Biking through landscapes typically for Småland!” adds a more substantial outing; the ruin is an optional destination along the way.

Church, Ruin and Remembrance

The Älmeboda kyrkoruin church ruin lies in the northern part of the parish of Älmeboda. The original church of Älmeboda was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque stone church with a nave, chancel and apse. Nave, chancel and apse describe the layout of a church building and provide tangible points of reference for Romanesque architecture. Älmeboda kyrka is built entirely of stone; its exterior façade is unusually stylishly designed in the Neoclassical style. For architectural comparison, the original Romanesque church and the Neoclassical exterior façade of Älmeboda kyrka offer distinct points of reference.

The old cemetery surrounding the church ruin is still in use. The memorial stone “Peststenen” stands in the area of the ruin. It commemorates the parish residents who fell victim to a plague epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century. Alongside the architectural history, the stone also brings into focus the people remembered in Älmeboda.

Älmeboda kyrka is open on weekdays from 08:00 to 15:00. If you are planning a visit at a specific time, it is advisable to confirm the exact visiting hours with the parish caretaker in advance. This lets you take the stated opening hours into account and plan your visit accordingly.

A Longer Bike Ride as a Separate Focus

The approximately 85-kilometre tour “Biking through landscapes typically for Småland!” follows small roads and paths through the eastern part of Tingsryd Municipality. The Älmeboda kyrkoruin church ruin can be visited as an optional destination along the way. The approximate distance helps you plan the tour as a more substantial part of your itinerary. As route conditions can change, check the condition of the route before setting out.

Rävemåla: Local Heritage and a Seasonal Café

Nearby is Rävemåla Hembygdspark, a local heritage park with several well-preserved buildings. The park includes a water-powered mill and a doctor’s surgery. There is also a stretch of track with associated carriages from the Krösnabanan narrow-gauge railway. The railway line ran between Nättraby and Älmeboda. Rävemåla thus brings together various aspects of local heritage and regional railway history: buildings, a mill, track and carriages, as well as the named route. The park is also a municipal InfoPoint for tourist information and a place to ask questions about the surrounding area.

In summer, the park has a café serving waffles and ice cream. As this is a seasonal offering, check the opening arrangements before travelling. This lets you plan a café visit as a summer addition without assuming it will be available at other times of the year.
