In the centre of Värnamo lies Apladalen, a 22-hectare nature and local history park. Here, landscape and city history come together: the grounds are home to cottages from the 18th and 19th centuries, associated with historic crafts such as shoemaking, brass casting, wire drawing and pottery. The Prästgården, the park’s museum, preserves the interior of a 19th-century vicarage. In Apladalen, you can encounter both specific craft traditions and the furnishings of a historic vicarage.

The historical walking tour Pinnapå offers another glimpse into Värnamo’s past. Blue, chair-shaped signs stand at twelve places of historical interest. Their design is inspired by Värnamo’s cultural heritage as a town of Windsor, or spindle-back, chairs. The stops link the city’s history with a motif that recurs in its design history.

Art, Design and Memories in the City

In the centre of Värnamo, the Bruno Mathsson Center includes an exhibition hall designed by Bruno Mathsson himself. It displays classic furniture, including the Pernilla, Eva, Jetson 66 and Miranda models. Exhibitions may change, so if you want to see a particular model, check what is currently on display in advance. Exhibitions also change at Vandalorum, a museum of art and design. At the Formstudio, children and adults can get creative together; during school holidays, there are additional activities for children, and the programme may vary depending on the holiday period.

Gummifabriken also brings together various aspects of cultural life: this modern visitor and meeting centre includes a cinema, café, restaurant, art exhibitions and the city library. The Blickfånget art gallery presents temporary exhibitions featuring different art forms and current themes. The cultural history section includes the exhibition spaces Avtrycket and Utblicken. The permanent city history exhibition “Värnamo – vår stad berättar” tells the stories of the people, places and events that have shaped Värnamo. “Gummifabriken – Ett hus med historia” offers a different perspective on industrial history: former employees share their voices and experiences through texts, objects and photographs.

If you would like to explore art in public spaces, the public art walk Konstvandring introduces 14 different works of art. Another art route in Gummifabriken starts at the information centre on level 0. The mix of museums, exhibition spaces and walking routes offers different ways to encounter art and history, without requiring one single theme to define your entire visit.

Green Spaces and Outdoor Activities

For a change of pace from exhibitions and city history, Värnamo also offers outdoor activities. Options include pump tracks, mountain biking trails and cycle routes around lakes and through the countryside. The centrally located skatepark has around 1,200 square metres of concrete surface. Skateboarding, inline skating, BMX and kick biking are allowed there; check the local rules before using the park.

The municipality has 19 nature reserves with varied landscapes, including beech forests, open moorland, hay meadows and swamp forests. The surrounding area also includes the Store Mosseleden cycle route, which runs between Värnamo and Hillerstorp and passes through Store Mosse National Park. Naturkartan provides maps of hiking trails, pilgrimage routes and walking paths in Värnamo. These details help you appreciate the area’s urban offerings and natural attractions as different facets of the region, rather than combining them into a single excursion route.

Planning Around Events and Travel

The Värnamo Filmhistoriska Festival takes place annually and is Sweden’s only film festival devoted exclusively to Swedish film history. Dates and programmes may change, so check the details for the relevant edition in advance. This allows you to include a recurring cultural event in your travel plans without assuming a specific date.

Transport connections are also part of getting your bearings: Värnamo is located where the E4 motorway meets National Road 27 and is also a railway junction. Train services include routes between Gothenburg and Karlskrona or Kalmar, and between Halmstad and Nässjö or Jönköping. Services and timetables may change, so it is worth checking the current timetable before travelling.
