Bredaryd brings together a range of things to discover: the heritage park brings historic buildings together, the church preserves older furnishings, and paths outside the town lead along lakes. For planning, you can therefore consider local history, nature and specific events separately—and choose the focus that suits your stay.

Getting to Bredaryd

Bredaryd is located on National Road 27 and Road 153 and can be reached by car or bus. The train is also an option: Krösatågen trains stop at Bredaryd station or stop on the route between Halmstad and Jönköping/Nässjö. Check the timetable before travelling to make sure your journey fits your planned visit dates. The roads and train connection mentioned offer different travel options; no specific travel times are implied.

Heritage park and local history

Bredaryd Heritage Park was founded in 1938. Its buildings date from the early 19th to the early 20th century. The collection includes two simple houses, one of them two-storey, as well as a drying hut, a parish granary and Pelle Nyman’s workshop. An industrial museum, a sawmill, a forge, a church stable and an exhibition space complete the site. If you would like to visit the buildings managed by the local heritage association, you can arrange a visit in advance with its chair, Katarina Landin, at 070-2647654.

Bredaryd Church also tells a story of changing building periods: it was built in 1863, replacing an older medieval church. The triumphal cross and altarpiece come from the old church and were restored by Erik Sköld in 1937–1938; both were installed in the church interior of the present-day church. Bredaryd Chapel formerly served as a mortuary. Today, a weekday service is held there every Tuesday at 6 pm throughout the year. As the schedule may change, check the date before your visit.

Market and outdoor activities

Bredaryd’s market is held every year in the centre of town and attracts numerous exhibitors and visitors from near and far. Dates vary, so check the specific date if you would like the market to be part of your travel plans. This lets you plan your visit around the event rather than assume it will take place on any given day of your stay.

The Heligsjö outdoor recreation area lies just outside Bredaryd. A walking path runs around the lake, as does a mountain biking trail. Further west, near the village of Hamra, is the Fågelsjön Draven nature reserve, perhaps better known as a birdwatching area. It has two birdwatching towers and a nine-kilometre hiking trail around the lake. The activities are distinct: Heligsjö combines a walk with a mountain biking loop, while Draven offers birdwatching towers and a longer hiking route.

In winter, the illuminated running and cross-country skiing trail network in Bredaryd has an additional use, weather permitting: it is usually converted into ski trails. Bredaryd sports hall also has a squash court with two courts. These can be booked through Bredaryd Squash; check booking options again before travelling.

More ideas for your stay

Wärdshuset Bredaryd offers food and drink experiences, adding a culinary focus to the cultural and nature-related activities. Which combination you choose depends on whether you want to focus on visiting the heritage park, attending an event, exploring the paths around the lakes or taking part in an indoor activity. If you would like to include several of these, you can set your dates and travel plans first, then arrange the other visits around them.
