The bowl of a medieval baptismal font is still in use today at Dannäs Church. Together with the local heritage park, historic gravestones and Vinsta Nature Reserve, it makes Dannäs a destination where cultural history and nature can be explored in different ways.
Cultural History in the Church, Cemetery and Heritage Park
Dannäs is designated a cultural landscape of national interest for heritage conservation. Dannäs Church was probably built in the 13th century and is the oldest church in the Bolmen area. Among its distinctive historical details is the bowl of a medieval baptismal font, which is still in use today.
The cemetery in Dannäs also has medieval origins. It contains paired gravestones dating from the late 17th century. Their stylised portraits, hourglasses and skulls give the stones a striking visual style. Dannäs Heritage Park offers another way to explore local history: it was inaugurated in 1954 and consists of four buildings.
Another historic landmark is Dannäs säteri. The main building was constructed in 1778; a dense avenue leads to the estate southwest of Dannäs Church. The dates and architectural forms point to different periods of history, without reducing these places to a single era.
Forests, Lakeshores and Trails in Vinsta Nature Reserve
Vinsta Nature Reserve is a lush deciduous forest on the shore of Lake Bolmen. Extensive terraced fields have also been identified at Vinsta. The lakeside woodland and archaeological traces of cultivated land offer distinct perspectives on the area.
Please note the local access arrangements: the private forest road to the nature reserve is gated. Visitors can, however, park at Dannäs gård and walk along the forest road into the protected area. Parking arrangements may change; check them before your visit.
The small Södra Fyllen bathing spot is also near Dannäs, beside a beech forest. It has shallow water and a playground. Water conditions and facilities may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
Waffles, Blueberries and a Summer’s Day
Dannäs Våffelcafé is located in the former Dannäs school, whose history dates back to 1881. It serves a varied selection of food, waffles and homemade pastries. As menu details may change seasonally, it is best to check before your visit.
North of Dannäs, in Torskinge, Vadet gård offers pick-your-own American blueberries on certain days from late July. Dates and availability depend on the harvest and the year. Another possible summer event is Bolmendagen: it takes place every summer on the last Saturday in July, when Dannäs Hembygdsförening presents its activities. The two offerings are subject to different conditions: Bolmendagen has a fixed date in the annual calendar, while blueberry picking also depends on the harvest and specific days. Check the relevant dates before planning your trip.
Plan Your Journey and Accommodation
Dannäs is easiest to reach by car, bus or bicycle. Regional buses operated by Jönköpings länstrafik run between Värnamo and Dannäs; check the timetable before travelling. When planning, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay, such as the cultural and historical sites, nature at Vinsta or a seasonal offering.
