Bor combines a distinctive railway history with trails, woodland and lakes. The town can be explored through both its station buildings and the hiking and nature destinations in the surrounding area. When planning, it helps to distinguish between the different types of attractions: seasonal train rides, trails in the recreation area and lakeside spots each offer something different.
Getting here and railway history
Bor can be reached by bus, train and car, and is located on National Road 27. Krösatåg trains stop at the station on the Coast-to-Coast Line. The settlement’s characteristic railway-village layout began to take shape around 1900. One visible reminder of this history is the old station house from 1902, which now houses a café.
During the summer months, the Ohsabanan heritage railway runs between Ohs and Bor. Its route passes through Småland’s unspoilt woodland landscape, by small lakes and meadows. This makes it different from the rail service at the station: the Ohsabanan is a seasonal experience on a separate line. Check the operator’s timetable before travelling.
Trails and outdoor activities around Skräddarebo
The Skräddarebo recreation area is on the edge of town. Its natural trails are suitable for walking and hiking, and mountain biking is also possible. The Skräddareborundan offers a specific option for a circular walk: it is 1.6 kilometres long, flat and adapted for accessibility, and runs around a lake. Those looking for mountain bike trails will find the “Mountainbike i Bor” route in Skräddarebo, among others. It is 3.9 kilometres long, rated red and of moderate difficulty, with technical trails and steep sections along the way.
There are also outdoor activity options in town: Bor has a multi-sport arena for recreational and sporting activities. The Rörelseparken includes a pump track. These destinations complement the trails in Skräddarebo, without requiring the same kind of outing.
The Lundsbo bokskog nature reserve is about 1.5 kilometres outside Bor. It has trails for walking, hiking and mountain biking, as well as accessibility-adapted trails with firm, compacted gravel surfaces. The reserve also contains the elevated Kepsmacken shelter, which has a barbecue area. Information about the trail surfaces helps distinguish this woodland from the technical and steep sections of the mountain bike route in Skräddarebo.
Lakes, fishing and birdwatching
The nearby lakes Furen and FlĂĄren offer fishing. Fish species found there include zander, eel, pike, vendace and perch. The Hyltans bathing spot is also on Lake Furen, with sandy and stony shores, shallow water and a barbecue area. If you are planning a stay by the water, you can choose between fishing and a bathing spot with different types of shoreline.
Södergårdsviken lies south of Bor, a little over a kilometre away, at the northern tip of Lake Flåren. Activities there include birdwatching, walking around the lake and visiting a birdwatching tower. Parking is available at the tower or on the access road. Pinnarekulla is another nearby spot for birdwatching: this wetland is known for its diverse animal and bird life.
Cultural landscape in the region
The landscape between Bor and Rydaholm also offers a cultural attraction: Getaryggarna is a cultural environment of national interest. It includes old cultural routes, villages with wooden buildings dating from the 19th century, manor house environments and an older cultural landscape. This wider regional perspective complements Bor’s immediate attractions without equating them with the broader cultural landscapes.
The former inn at Gästgivarevägen 2 is also part of the town’s history. Until 1922, it served as a stopping place for changing horses. Together with the station house, it recalls different chapters in Bor’s transport and settlement history.
