Hede lies in Sonfjällsbygden in the heart of Härjedalen and is considered a starting point for hikes with views of the region’s mountain landscape. In the village, architectural history, walking trails along the Ljusnan and various fishing opportunities come together. If you would like to focus your stay on one particular theme, you can weigh up the options between cultural heritage sites, marked trails and activities connected with the river and other waters.

Church architecture and local culture

The present-day Hede kyrka was built between 1770 and 1775. Right beside it stands a freestanding bell tower with an onion-shaped dome, built as early as 1751. The tower is therefore older than the present-day church. The interior features a local stylistic variant known as Härjedalsrokoko, associated with the work on the church in the 1770s. The dates of construction and the name of the style give the church a clear focus on cultural history.

Sockenstugan stands at Hede hembygdsgård. The building formerly served as a school and community hall; its age is estimated at between 1850 and 1870. Today it is used as a weaving room. A festive tradition is associated with its kitchen, where “flötgröt” is prepared; the dish is described as Härjedalen’s national dish. The rooms of the tourist information office in Hede also host several exhibitions, including one about Sonfjället.

Walking trails, river and landscape

Three walking trails start from the centre of Hede. They are marked with the difficulty levels Green, Blue and Red. One route follows the Ljusnan and takes the same path in both directions. There are rest areas along the way with tables, benches and a barbecue. When choosing a trail, these details answer different questions: the colours indicate the stated difficulty, while the river route is defined by its course and opportunities to rest.

There are also different options when it comes to fishing. In Hede, you can fish for game fish in around thirty waters; some of the fishing lakes lie in mountain landscapes at elevations of up to 1,000 metres. Downstream from Hede, a dedicated stretch of the Ljusnan has also been set aside for fly-fishing. For planning purposes, the main distinction between the options is the type of fishing: game fish in several waters or fly-fishing on the specially designated stretch of the Ljusnan.

The golf course of Hede-Vemdalens Golfklubb offers a different landscape setting: it lies on cultivated meadowland in a sand delta formed in the Ljusnan valley. This brings the cultivated meadow into focus as a specific landscape feature alongside the valley. The swimming pool in Hede is located by the school. If you would like to include it in your stay, check current visiting options before you go.
