Messlingesjön lies at the foot of Messlingen. The Anådalen Nature Reserve and Anåfjället border its southern shore; the lake is unregulated, and boat or canoe trips are possible. The south shore is also home to a ruined herder’s hut, grassy meadows and old house foundations. If you’re looking for accommodation in Messlingen, you can plan your stay around whether you’d like to spend more time by the water, on hiking trails or enjoying winter sports.

Lake, Gorges and Mountain Landscape

One striking geological feature is Evagraven: it is about 800 metres long, up to 25 metres wide and 15 metres deep. It formed during the last Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago, when meltwater cut through the mountain. Fiskhålsgraven, a geologically unique gorge, lies just north of the village of Messlingen in Härjedalen. It is home to an isolated population of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus). This fish species is protected and subject to fishing restrictions.

Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage

The Anådalen–Messlingen hiking section leads to the outlet of Messlingesjön. There, hikers cross the Mittån on a suspension bridge. The Baggården–Fiskhålsgraven hiking route starts at Baggården in Messlingen, is 9.5 kilometres long and is rated moderate. Conditions on the route may vary.

Trails with traces of cultural history are also part of the area’s character. The Ruvallsrundan passes Baggården’s red log cabins and barns; the oldest date back to the 18th century. Along the Stadsåsrundan are several privately operated summer farms in the Funäsfjällen region. The Ruvallen car park is a starting point for the Hällmålningsrundan.

Right next to the pump track in Messlingen, there is a wind shelter with tables, benches and a barbecue area. The pump track itself is designed for all ages and experience levels. Alongside hiking and exploring historic landscapes, this offers another activity in its own right to enjoy in the village.

Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Excursions

The Kappruet ski area is right next to Messlingen. Kappruet has cross-country ski trails, and the area is also connected to the Funäsfjällen snowmobile trail network. Messlingen’s trail centre has several circular trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The cross-country ski trails in Messlingen pass through sheltered sections of forest and open mountain landscapes with wide-ranging views. Trail grooming depends on the weather and snow conditions.

For a different kind of winter outing, half-day and full-day guided snowmobile tours can be booked in the mountain landscape around Messlingen. Cross-country skiing offers circular trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, while guided snowmobile tours differ in duration. This makes it easy to compare the winter activities available by type and time commitment.

Fishing and Practical Information

The Messlingen fishing area includes mountain ponds, flowing waters and lakes. Brown trout, Arctic char, brook trout, perch, burbot and stocked brook char are found there; the mix of species may change over time. There are two different types of fishing permits, and local permits and rules apply. Before setting off, check with the local fishing association to find out which regulations are in force.

From Funäsdalen, you can reach Messlingen via Mittådalsvägen and Flatruetvägen. The latter is Sweden’s highest public road. Road conditions and seasonal restrictions may vary; conditions at the Ruvallen car park may also change seasonally. Checking before you drive will help you plan your trip.
