Vemdalen offers several reasons to plan a stay according to the season: in winter, skiing and snow activities take centre stage; in summer, hiking, cycling and fishing. It is also home to a special cultural site, Vemdalens kyrka. The following distinctions can help you match your interests with the right time to travel.
Church and cultural heritage
Vemdalens kyrka is a Rococo country church considered unique in Swedish church architecture. The present building was completed in 1763. South of the church are well-preserved older buildings belonging to historic farmsteads and an inn. Vemdalens Hembygdsgård is one of the oldest local heritage farms in Jämtland. A cycling tour offers a different perspective: the Cykelled Vemdalen bytur route passes through Vemdalen and offers views of older buildings, including Hembygdsgård. This makes building history and a cycling tour through the village distinct ways to explore its cultural heritage.
Winter: ski areas and snow activities
The Vemdalen destination comprises three ski areas close to the mountains. SkiStar Snow Park Vemdalen has jumps, rails and boxes for riders of all ages and ability levels. Other winter activities offer different experiences: Vemdalens Snöskoterklubb offers 30 Swedish miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Vemdalen. On a dog-sledding trip, Alaskan Huskies pull visitors through winter landscapes with snow-covered spruce trees and mountains in the background. Guided snowshoe tours are also offered in the destination area, and snowshoes can be rented for independent trips. As tour and rental arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before making plans.
Summer: mountain nature, trails and water
Summer activities in Vemdalen’s mountain nature include hiking, cycling and fishing. The landscape around Vemdalen features mountains, waterfalls, forests and wide-open scenery. There are 18 Swedish miles of marked mountain hiking trails in Vemdalen; trail posts and crosses mark the routes. Destination Vemdalen keeps the signage, rest shelters and trail markings in good condition. Weather and maintenance can affect the markings and trail conditions, so it is advisable to check before setting out. The Veman River offers another option: it flows through Vemdalen to Vemhån and then towards Svegsjön. It is a possible choice for a longer canoe adventure. At 30 Swedish miles, the groomed snowmobile trails are longer than the 18 Swedish miles of marked mountain hiking trails.
Getting there and planning
Vemdalen can be reached by train, bus, car or plane. There are six InfoPoints and a tourist information office to help you find your way around the destination area. Check the timetables for your chosen connection before departure. If you are planning a guided snowshoe tour or a rental, also check the current arrangements; trail conditions and markings can change with the weather and maintenance.
