The Tännån River winds through Tännäs, where the landscape brings together forests and mountains. The area also offers experiences that are quite distinct from one another: a church at an unusual elevation, a guided tour focused on musk oxen, a cycling route and opportunities for sport fishing. When planning your trip, it’s worth keeping these highlights separate: some visits must be arranged in advance, while other activities have a clearly described itinerary or a specific geographical range.

Forests, mountains and the Tännån River

Tännäs combines lush woodland with dramatic mountain scenery and offers experiences throughout the year. The Tännån winds through the village, shaping part of its landscape. If you’re interested in the natural surroundings, you’ll find a place where forests, mountains and a river come together to create the setting—though not every activity has the same focus. Options range from a guided tour with an exhibition to a longer cycling route or sport fishing in waters open to fishing.

Tännäs Church: at a high elevation and usually locked

At 648 metres above sea level, Tännäs Church is among the highest-altitude churches in Sweden. The present church was built between 1840 and 1855 and inaugurated on 10 October 1858. Its elevation and history make it a notable destination for travellers interested in local history as well as the landscape and activities.

There’s one practical restriction to keep in mind when visiting: the church is usually locked. If you’d like to visit, contact the parish office to arrange a visit. A church attendant will open the church if possible. Unlike a freely accessible attraction, this is something you should factor into your plans.

Guided musk ox tour and cycling route

The guided tour run by Myskoxcentrum starts in Tännäs; from there, you drive a further 7 kilometres in your own car. The tour includes a 200-metre walk along a gravel path. It passes a viewing tower where you can see the area and the natural habitat of the wild musk ox herd. The experience also includes a visit to the musk ox enclosure, followed by an exhibition. There, you can learn more and ask questions. So the itinerary combines a guided tour, a short walk and a visit to an exhibition.

The Tännäslänken offers a different way to spend time outdoors: it’s an easy 39-kilometre cycling route. You can start and finish at either the Härjedalen Mountain Museum or Tännäskröket. The distance and difficulty rating help distinguish this option from the shorter walk during the guided tour; the two activities are not the same in terms of time or exertion. Check the route status before setting off. The Tännäsleden passes Klyfttjärnsstugan, a suitable place to stop for a coffee break.

Sport fishing and a visit to Härjebrygg

For sport fishing, Tännäs-Funäsdalen FVO has 70 designated fishing waters. With the Fiskepasset permit, you can fish in most of the designated sport fishing waters in the Funäs and Tännäs area, including waters allocated by the state. This information applies to the specifically named area; the FVO’s 70 waters should not be confused with a single body of water in the village.

Funäsfjällen’s microbrewery Härjebrygg is also located in Tännäs and welcomes visitors. If you’re planning a visit, check the visiting arrangements before you arrive. Together with the church, guided tour and routes, it offers a range of options with different focuses: cultural history, musk oxen, cycling, sport fishing or a visit to a local brewery. The landscape provides a shared backdrop, while each experience has its own itinerary and conditions.
