In Hylte, you can visit 18 nature reserves for relaxation, outdoor activities, birdwatching and other experiences in nature. One example is Mårås, where a 2.3-kilometre trail leads through ancient, untouched beech forest inhabited by rare plants and animals. Check the local rules before visiting.

Hiking trails with varied routes

Brunnsbackaleden offers 4- or 8-kilometre options. It starts at the local heritage park in Unnaryd, passes through Ödegärdet Nature Reserve and along Kroksjön to Brunnsbacka sågkvarn. Hallandsleden crosses Hylte Municipality from Simlångsdalen to Rydöbruk and then continues north towards Kinnared. This gives you a choice between a shorter loop with a historical destination and a long-distance trail with several named stops along the way.

Two trails with a stated length of 12 kilometres also differ in how they are marked: Jälluntoftaleden is signposted and marked in orange; it starts at Bygdegården/Chalanderska museet. Its five rest stops include one with a shelter, barbecue area and toilet. The yellow Skärshult route is also 12 kilometres long. There is also a green 5.8-kilometre option starting at the car park at Skärshults camping. The views from the highest ridges extend across the lakes. Check the facilities available at the rest stops before your visit.

In Femsjö, Gula spåret is about 4 kilometres long, with shorter red and blue options. Information boards present the area’s natural and cultural history. Another 5.7-kilometre walk passes through the home area of local bailiff Anders Jönsson, along winding village roads and past old farmsteads, legendary sites and torf ruins. Höljeryd or Ekhult are possible starting points.

Lakes, paddling and fishing

Hylte is part of a land of a thousand lakes, with numerous bodies of water containing many fish species. A fishing licence is always required to fish in Hylte’s lakes, even when fishing from a jetty. Check the rules for the specific body of water. The Jällunden fishing area includes the 870-hectare lake Jällunden. Pike, perch and eel occur naturally there; zander has been introduced.

A paddling route starts in Lake Unnen near Unnaryd and follows a river to Bolmen, then continues south via Bolmån and the Lagan, which flows into the sea. A lake system with many smaller lakes, bays and islands is also suitable for a day trip by canoe. Selected swimming spots in Hylte have jetties, toilets and adapted accessibility; some also have designated dog swimming areas. Facilities may vary from one swimming spot to another.

Cultural sites along trails and in towns

Brunnsbacka sågkvarn near Unnaryd is a restored sawmill, mill and stock planer dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is located by Kroksjön and is the destination of Brunnsbackaleden. Near Torup stands Bosgårdsfallet, an 11-metre-high waterfall. A larger sawmill and mill operated there until the early 1930s; there are hiking trails in the surrounding area.

The churches also tell stories spanning long periods: in Hylte, their origins date back to the 12th century. QR-code tours in the cemeteries of Hyltebruk parish provide information about people buried there and about the churches. Unnaryd is considered an ancient cultural area in Hylte, combining a vibrant arts and crafts tradition with a long-established market, small-scale commerce and locally produced food. Hylte Konst- och Hantverksrunda takes place every year over Easter weekend; check the programme details before your trip.

In Landeryd, you can visit the locomotive sheds; a railway heritage trail is open year-round. The station is a state-listed historic building. For another historical perspective, the information boards along Gula spåret in Femsjö bring together the area’s natural and cultural history.

Cycling routes of different lengths

The circular route around Färgensjöarna has three options: 18, 21 or 40 kilometres. Hultagärdesbacken outside Torup offers a different focus: the blue Flowtrack is 550 metres long and designated for children and beginners, while the 320-metre red downhill trail is for experienced mountain bikers. Marked trail routes cover 5, 10 and 30 kilometres. Check the facility’s status before setting off.
