Varberg showcases the coast and history in different ways: the long stretches of sandy beach at Apelviken embody its maritime character, while Varberg Fortress is an important symbol of Varberg and all of Halland, representing its historic side. A cold bathhouse dating from 1903, a cultural history museum and the history of technology at Grimeton add to these discoveries. Depending on your interests, you can choose between coastal activities, exhibitions, architectural history and technological experiences.
Coast, bathing spots and trails
Apelviken has long stretches of sandy beach and offers windsurfing and beach volleyball. The season and weather affect conditions for these activities. There are also places to swim along the beach promenade: you can use the bathing jetties or the beach. Seasonal facilities may vary.
A new section of the beach promenades connects Apelviken with the centre of Varberg and makes it easier to reach the bay on foot or on wheels. Subbeleden is described as a southern extension of the beach promenades. These names refer to different ways of navigating the coast, without assuming a walking time or a particular mode of transport.
Ă…kullaleden starts in the urban area of Varberg and is approximately 25 kilometres long. Trail conditions may vary; take this into account when planning. The stated starting point and approximate length are useful guides when choosing a route.
Fortress and museum
The history of Varberg Fortress on the hill goes back to a stone castle completed around 1300. It was the first known structure there. Today, the fortress is considered an important symbol of the history of Varberg and all of Halland. Guided tours include winding spiral staircases, dark cannon rooms and impressive views across the Kattegat. Tour availability may vary by season.
Hallands kulturhistoriska museum is located at the fortress and can be accessed through the castle courtyard. The Bocksten Man is considered the museum’s main attraction. The exhibition Borgen offers a medieval-inspired play world. Together, these subjects offer different ways to explore the past: the history of the fortress hill, a remarkable museum object and an exhibition that brings the Middle Ages to life as a play world.
Cold bathhouse and other discoveries
The current Kallbadhuset dates from 1903 and is the third cold bathhouse to stand at this location. Year-round, you can swim in the sea and then enjoy a sauna with views of the Kattegat; operating conditions may vary. Even if you don’t want to swim, you can enjoy the architecture, the sea and views of the fortress over fika. Café availability may vary.
Badhuset Pingvinen is located in the Håsten recreation area. Under one roof, it has a swimming pool, an ice rink, a gym and a café; the bathing area includes a 50-metre pool. As pool layouts and facilities may change, check the latest information before visiting. Nearby Naturum Getterön offers another perspective on nature: it provides information about wildlife and the natural environment, with a particular focus on birds.
The history of technology at Grimeton
Grimeton is home to the world’s last complete and operational Alexanderson long-wave transmitter. Grimeton Radio Station was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Guided tours bring the history, people and technology of this World Heritage site vividly and in detail to life. In late summer and autumn, the Day Shift tour is available on Saturdays. Since the tour programme is organised seasonally, it’s worth checking the current schedule before visiting.
