Espadilla brings together historic buildings, religious sites, and hiking trails. Three contrasts are especially useful when planning a visit: the different periods represented in the architecture, the visible remains of a ruined fortress, and the different lengths of two named routes. The details can help you decide whether your interests lie more in local history, individual heritage sites, or hiking.

Local History and Buildings

Espadilla’s traditional historic center has Islamic origins. Two other historical landmarks are the 18th-century parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista, and the 17th-century Casa Abadía. Casa Abadía currently houses the town hall. Together, they represent different aspects: the origins of the center, a religious building, and a building now used for municipal purposes.

The ruined condition of Castillo de Espadilla is part of its appearance today. The fortress still has visible walls, a cistern, and the remains of a tower. It lies just over a kilometer from the town center and can be reached by a signposted path. Trail conditions can change, so check them shortly before setting out.

Religious Sites and Green Spaces

The stations at Calvario include various depictions of Semana Santa. Ermita de San Roque can be reached via a short, scenic walk, making it another option for a visit where the journey itself is part of the experience. The two places offer different highlights: the depictions are the focus at Calvario, while at the ermita the walk there is also part of the experience.

Espadilla’s botanical garden includes a recreation area. If you are planning to visit specifically for this facility, check its current condition in advance, as the facilities there may change.

Hiking: Comparing Two Routes

The PR-CV 314 circular hiking trail is 9.00 kilometers long and starts at C/ Montico 12 in Espadilla. It follows the old mule track between Espadilla and Ayódar or passes through the Barranco de la Piqueta below the medieval castle. The route’s last quality check is listed as July 2023; trail conditions can change. Check them before your hike.

The PR-CV 386 Camino a la Cueva Negra is 11.90 kilometers long, with Espadilla serving as its reference municipality. Based on the stated lengths, this route is 2.90 kilometers longer than the PR-CV 314. The location details also differ: a starting point in Espadilla is given for the PR-CV 314, while the PR-CV 386 lists a reference municipality. The PR-CV 386 has no quality-control status. Check current trail conditions before hiking.

Peña Saganta reaches an elevation of 723 meters. The area around Espadilla has hiking trails as well as springs, old livestock pens, masías, and lime kilns. A tributary of the Río Mijares flows through the municipality and forms a natural pool used for swimming in summer. Swimming conditions can vary, so check them locally. The Sastre, Piqueta, and Silvia springs are considered to have mineral-medicinal water.
