A coastal wetland, trails leading to a castle, and a Roman arch that has survived to this day reveal different sides of Cabanes. Explore the nature park, coastal paths and historic remains as separate highlights – choose what suits your travel plans.
Coastal wetland and mountain landscape
The Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park is a coastal wetland recognized as a wetland of international importance. El Cudolà beach is located in the park, with a coastline of around 2,000 meters. At Torre la Sal beach, traditional fishermen’s houses recall the former fishing settlement. Four watchtowers stand in the surrounding area, including Torre la Sal.
Quartell Vell is also part of the wider area around Cabanes: the ruins of an old Carabineros barracks stand on the beach, which has a coastline of 3,300 meters. Check access conditions before visiting. The Desert de les Palmes Nature Park offers a different kind of landscape: mountains close to the coast. Its highest point is Bartolo, at 729 meters.
The coastal paths and routes up to Bartolo differ considerably in their destinations and landscapes. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the wetland and coast or on a mountain hike.
Hiking trails and cycling routes
The Ruta de les Santes is a very easy 4-kilometer route. It starts and ends at Ermita de les Santes. Also 4 kilometers long is the easy walk to Miravet Castle: a marked forest track leads from the hermitage to the remains of the fortress. The castle is of Muslim origin, and architectural remains have survived.
For a longer hike, the easy “El Bartolo i les Santes” route covers 9.9 kilometers and leads to Bartolo. From the highest point in the nature park, panoramic views extend over the coast of Castelló and large parts of the inland area. For a different perspective on the surrounding area, the very easy, marked Torre la Sal 2 trail runs for 6.5 kilometers along the coast, through fossil dunes and wetlands, to near the ruins of an old Carabineros barracks.
The Senda Local de Cabanes SLC1 is a very easy 5.74-kilometer loop that you can do on foot or by bicycle. There is also a route from the coastal settlement of Torre la Sal in Cabanes to the beaches of neighboring Torreblanca, which you can travel on foot or by bicycle. Distances and destinations offer different ways to choose: short walks to the hermitage or castle, a hike to Bartolo, and coastal routes through wetlands and dunes. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Mountain biking enthusiasts will find a network of more than 100 kilometers of MTB routes in Cabanes, divided into five routes. Check again before your trip to confirm that the route network is available.
Historic sights in town
Historic structures include the Arco Romano de Cabanes, dating from the 2nd century, and the medieval men’s prison from the 15th century. An archaeological settlement in Cabanes was inhabited 4,000 to 2,500 years ago, during the Bronze Age and early Iron Age. The medieval settlement was protected by walls with four gates, which were closed at nightfall.
A guided “Paseo cultural por Cabanes” introduces visitors to the layout of the former Muslim settlement, medieval manor houses, a medieval oven and one of the former town gates. Confirm that this guided tour is available before your trip.
Fira de Sant Andreu
The Fira de Sant Andreu in Cabanes is recognized as a festival of provincial tourist interest. Its recurring features include a traditional livestock exhibition and a bonsai exhibition. The Fira also offers food products from CastellĂł, including nougat, confectionery, wine, cheese, cured meats and salted products.
