Cirat combines local history with various ways to spend time outdoors. Notable cultural sites include a medieval tower, an ethnological museum and a Baroque church; trails also lead through forests and to water pools. If you want to include both culture and nature in your stay, you can plan your visits around your interests and seasonal conditions.

History and Traditions in Cirat

The Torre del Palacio de los Condes de Cirat was built in the 13th century during the Moorish period and the Reconquista. The building has two floors; the lower one was probably a cistern. This cautious interpretation is part of the tower’s history, as is its date of construction.

The Museo Etnológico de Cirat is spread across three locations: the Torre del Conde, the oven and the Casa Abadía. The ground floor of the Casa Abadía depicts everyday life through objects donated by Cirat residents. Museum visits must be arranged in advance; also check the current layout of the locations.

The Iglesia de San Bernardo is a Baroque church and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Castillo de Cirat, whose origins are probably Andalusian, is a separate site. Cirat therefore offers several different historical points of interest, rather than just one building.

The festival calendar can also play a part in planning your trip. During Holy Week, the image of the Dolorosa is carried through Cirat in a procession. The patron saint festivities in honor of San Bernardo Abad take place during the week of August 20; the specific program varies from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates and program for the year you intend to visit.

Hiking Trails, Water Pools and Cycling Routes

Nine pools of clear, cool water lie in the Barranco de las Salinas, from La Bañera to La Caldereta. An easy, two-kilometer hiking trail leads to these pools. Swimming conditions may vary depending on the time of year; the trail may also be in a different condition after weather events.

The linear out-and-back route R-2 El Salto de la Novia leads to the natural sites of Salto de la Novia and Barranco de las Salinas. At certain points, signs provide information about the fauna, flora and natural surroundings. Check the trail conditions and signage locally before setting out.

Another option is route R-3 De Cirat a El Tormo: it connects the two places and climbs from the river through dense pine forests. Caves, ravines, winding paths and old farmhouses are part of the landscape described. As route conditions can change, a local check before your hike is recommended.

For trail running, there is Trail Cirat, an eleven-kilometer route on paths and tracks around Cirat. Event and route conditions can also change; check for current information in advance. If you prefer mountain biking, Centro BTT Alto Mijares offers two routes through Cirat and its mountains, most of which run along tracks. Check the current route network map before setting out.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

Cirat can be reached via the CV-20, which runs between Torrechiva and Montanejos. As road layouts can change, check your navigation before driving. When choosing a hotel in Cirat, consider what you plan to focus on: local history and the museum, the pools in the Barranco de las Salinas, or time for hiking, running and cycling routes.
