Visitors to Todolella encounter medieval architecture not only in individual buildings: the winding streets also follow a distinctly medieval layout. Other highlights include unusual church architecture, traditional dances and places to visit in the surrounding area. This offers different ways to plan a trip: explore the town’s architectural history, attend seasonal festivals, or enjoy the landscape and nature.
Medieval architecture and striking buildings
The Parish Church of San Bartolomé Apóstol dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, with a dome rising at the centre. Inside are paintings and a 15th-century altarpiece. The church therefore brings together a medieval construction period and later decorative elements.
Another architectural highlight is the Palace of the Viscounts of Todolella. The building, with its Gothic features, dates from the 16th century and consists of four sections arranged around a central courtyard. The palace is privately owned. The church and palace thus offer two distinct ways to appreciate the town’s architectural history: the cross-shaped plan with its dome and the palace structure arranged around a courtyard.
Festivals in different seasons
SantantonĂ takes place around mid-February; the exact date may vary from year to year. The celebration depicts the life of the saint. He is then carried through the streets in a procession that ends at a bonfire. The event combines a dramatic re-enactment with a procession through the town and a shared gathering around the fire.
Traditional performances are also part of the festivities in August. In honour of San Bartolomé and San Redento, women in traditional dress perform Les Gitanetes, a choreography featuring colourful ribbons. Les Danses Guerreres has a different focus. This traditional dance of Iberian origin is performed by eight men in typical dress; its thirteen steps imitate a fight with sticks and swords. It is part of the patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Bartholomew and is performed on the Sunday of the festival. These festivities take place every year during the week of 24 August. If you are choosing between a visit in February and one in August, this highlights the difference between the approximate timing of Santantonà and the set week of the patron saint festivities.
Scenery and walking routes around Todolella
La Mola de Todolella is the small mountain on which the castle stands. The summit offers far-reaching views. Another viewpoint is Forat del Lladre, which looks out over a densely vegetated gorge with striking rock bands. Font del CamarĂł offers a different, seasonal natural feature. This small waterfall emerges vertically between the rocks in spring; its flow can vary.
A walk from Todolella across the Gothic bridge leads after about four kilometres to the abandoned settlement of Sarañana, also known as Saranyana. Remains of a Romanesque-style chapel are preserved there. From there, you can continue to the hermitage of San Cristófol, which dates from the 15th century and is associated with impressive views. The bridge itself is one kilometre from the town on the CV-120, dates from 1397 and is open to visitors free of charge. This route therefore brings several different destinations together: crossing the bridge, the chapel remains in the abandoned settlement and the hermitage.
Crafts and special experiences
Local crafts include processing hemp in the streets of Todolella. It has traditionally been used to make espadrilles, known as “espardenyes”. This work can often be seen on days other than Sundays and public holidays. The focus here is not on a single building, but on a craft activity in the town and a traditional product.
A culinary visit is also possible: Jamones Alfredo Monfort offers tours of its facilities, where visitors can learn about the curing process and storage cellars, followed by a tasting of its products. Confirm arrangements before travelling. There is also an astronomical observation point in the Santa Bárbara area. To use it, you need to contact the town council.
