Montán combines hiking trails, a water-rich landscape, and a multifaceted architectural and winemaking heritage. When planning your stay, it helps to choose a main focus: you can devote more of your time to circular and long-distance hiking trails, architecture, or the history of wine and local products. These different themes offer several perspectives on the town and its surroundings.

Hiking trails with different profiles

The Ruta Monte Calvario is a circular hike almost two kilometers long. The route is of moderate difficulty and has an elevation gain of 102 meters; take both into account when planning your hike. The GR 7 long-distance trail crosses the municipality of Montán from north to south. The GR 36 enters the municipality from the northeast and then leaves it as it continues toward its final destination.

The Ruta del Agua starts at Avenida de la Tejería. A cave along this route is more than one kilometer long and has three galleries. In summer, swimming is also possible in natural pools along the Ruta del Agua. Plan a visit to swim in the natural pools for the summer.

Waterscapes and viewpoints

Montán’s natural surroundings include numerous springs and fountains, as well as densely vegetated ravines with waterfalls and swimming pools. There are more than thirty fountains in the town and surrounding area. A viewpoint offers views of the 1,813-meter-high Peñagolosa massif.

The Fuente de la Tejería is about 600 meters from Montán. Its recreational area has stone tables and benches, a barbecue area, and a shelter. Inside the shelter there is a stone table.

Architectural heritage and ancient history

The Iglesia Parroquial San Bernardo Abad was completed in 1735. Its single-nave church features lavish Churrigueresque or late Baroque acanthus decoration. Another example of the town’s architectural history is the Convento de los Padres Servitas de San Miguel y Santa Ana, which is classified as post-Baroque and pre-academic.

Ceramics dating from the 7th to 6th century BC were recovered at the Monte Calvario archaeological site. The Museo Enológico offers another cultural perspective: it presents the art of grape harvesting and winemaking.

Wine and local produce

The Sacacubos festival takes place in October and includes a wine tasting. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the date before making arrangements. Olive oil is another local product: oil produced in Montán has been classified as extra virgin in analyses.
