Valdeavero brings together a diverse landscape and buildings dating back several centuries. When planning your stay, you can choose between nature, local history and the September festivities—each offering a different perspective on the town.

Natural Environment and Birdlife

The entire municipal area lies within the ZEPA Estepas cerealistas de los ríos Jarama y Henares Special Protection Area for Birds. The cereal steppe landscape of this protected area provides a habitat for populations of Montagu’s harriers, great bustards, European rollers, lesser kestrels, sandgrouse and little bustards. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so if you are travelling for the birdlife, you should not plan it as a fixed part of your itinerary. Check the applicable conservation regulations before undertaking activities, too.

Valdeavero’s landscape also includes scrubland with broom, gorse and thyme, as well as narrow strips of wet meadows with tall grass along the Arroyo Camarmilla. Riparian woods of willows, poplars and elms add to this variety of vegetation. There are paths in the natural areas that can be explored on foot; conditions on the trails may vary.

Architectural History and Religious Art

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the 16th century; its bell tower was rebuilt in the 19th century. The Rosario Chapel is notable for its wrought-iron grille and polychrome carving. The church also houses devotional images of the Santísimo Cristo del Sudor and Jesús Nazareno.

The Palacio del Marqués de Campoflorido was built in the 18th century. Its façade portal bears a coat of arms; a gallery connected the palace to the church. Valdeavero’s old dovecote also dates from the 18th century. The two-storey building is one of the few surviving structures of its kind in the Comunidad de Madrid. The remains of the so-called Pinoche de la Cigüeña recall another link between everyday life and architecture: the structure was used to channel water from the Arroyo Camarmilla to the Palacio.

The Ermita de la Soledad is a rectangular religious hermitage dating from the 18th century, with a pitched roof. Inside is an image of the Virgen de la Soledad holding Christ’s dead body in her lap. The cemetery and the Nuestra Señora del Carmen Chapel date from the 19th century and are located on the Paseo de la Ermita, next to the Ermita de la Soledad. The small chapel is Neo-Gothic and stands near the cemetery entrance.

Waterworks, Bridge and Practical Planning

The Antiguo Lavadero was an open-air washing facility and is no longer in use. Its two stepped rectangular basins had different functions: one was used for soaping, the other for rinsing. The former washhouse is on the left bank of the Arroyo de la Morcuera, near the Fuente Vieja. It can be reached from the road to Villanueva de la Torre via the Camino Viejo a Meco; conditions on site may change.

Puente de la Zarza is a three-arched bridge on the M-119 between Valdeavero and Camarma de Esteruelas. Its limestone blocks are joined with lime-and-sand mortar. The three arches are flattened round arches with internal barrel vaults made of clay bricks. These specific architectural features distinguish the bridge from the town’s religious and stately buildings, without assuming a construction date for it.

The annual festivities in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Sudor take place on 13 and 14 September. Religious events as well as entertainment, bullfighting-related and cultural activities are held on the nearest weekend; the exact programme may vary. Nature offers another option for planning a visit: birdwatching is seasonal but not guaranteed. Intercity bus route 251 connects Torrejón de Ardoz, Valdeavero and Alcalá de Henares. Check the current timetable before travelling.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, first decide what you want to focus on: the September festivities, architectural history or nature. The festival dates provide a specific timeframe, while wildlife sightings depend on the season and what is actually seen.
