San Martín de la Vega combines wetlands, a scenic cycling route, historic buildings and a theme park as different reasons to visit. Part of the municipality lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether nature and birdlife, cycling, architectural and commemorative heritage, or Parque Warner Madrid will be the focus of your stay.
Wetlands and birdlife
On the outskirts of San Martín de la Vega, on the M-506 towards Arganda, lies Parque Tierno Galván, also known as Parque de los patos. It was created from a former gravel pit and opened in 1983. The park is part of the Parque Regional del Sureste and has a deep lagoon.
Parque Tierno Galván is home to native waterside vegetation. Birds that can be spotted there include mallards, coots, robins and greylag geese. The park therefore offers specific opportunities for visitors who would also like to observe native birdlife during their stay.
Another natural area is the Reserva Ornitológica Los Albardales in Soto del Tamarizo. It covers approximately eight hectares and is part of the Parque Regional del Sureste. Its wetland provides numerous bird species with places to feed, rest and breed. Before visiting, check the access conditions locally.
Cycling route and getting there
One specific way to explore the landscape by bicycle is the circular route “Vuelta en bicicleta por los altos del Pingarrón desde San Martín de la Vega”. It runs from San Martín de la Vega through the Vega and over the hills on the left bank of the Jarama, offering panoramic views.
The M-301 also provides a route from Villaverde to San Martín de la Vega and has a cycle lane. Several regular bus routes connect San Martín de la Vega with Villaverde Bajo interchange station, where Metro Line 3 stops. The buses stop in the town or terminate there. As transport services can change, check current routes and timetables before travelling.
Architectural history and remembrance
The Iglesia Parroquial de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora is a place of worship dating from the 16th century. It has a rectangular floor plan, a single nave and a flat-ended chancel.
The Casa-Palacio de Gózquez de Arriba is part of the associated complex of the El Escorial monastery and was built in the 16th century on the orders of Philip II. Four wings form an inner courtyard that is partially open to the east. The vaulted cellars of the main building were formerly used to store wine jars. The estate is privately owned, so check access arrangements before visiting.
The Parque Histórico de la Batalla del Jarama is a joint initiative of Arganda del Rey, Morata de Tajuña, San Martín de la Vega and Rivas Vaciamadrid. Various routes present the heritage of the Spanish Civil War and the remnants of the battle. Information about fortifications and remains is available in the participating municipalities; educational activities are also organized throughout the year. San Martín de la Vega has some of the most significant remains from these battles. Check the dates in advance if you are planning to take part in an organized activity.
A theme park as another focus
Another kind of option is Parque Warner Madrid. It is located in the municipality of San Martín de la Vega, around 30 kilometres from the centre of Madrid. The theme park has five themed areas: Hollywood Boulevard, Movie World Studios, DC Super Heroes World, Old West Territory and Cartoon Village. It offers 34 rides and attractions of varying intensity for all age groups.
These options offer a range of interests to consider when planning your hotel and stay: wetlands and birdlife, the cycling route, historic buildings and traces of the battle, or the theme park. You can take the relevant access arrangements, activity dates and current bus connections into account when deciding which of these themes matters most to you.
