Garganta de los Montes and El Cuadrón are located in the northwest of the Community of Madrid and form the gateway to the Valle del Lozoya. The church, local traditions and routes with different durations and difficulty levels offer various ways to explore the area. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether cultural heritage, hiking or a combination of both should shape your visit.
A landscape of changing elevations
As the elevation increases, dense pine forests give way to broom, pastures and rocky terrain. Higher up, this landscape mosaic lies close to the peaks. Forest, open land and rock are therefore not interchangeable terms, but describe a sequence shaped by elevation. This changing landscape adds another point of reference to the specific route details: as well as duration and difficulty, you can consider the varied terrain when deciding what interests you during your stay.
Church, sculpture and local heritage
The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol dates from the late 15th century. It combines Byzantine, Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque elements. The church is therefore a starting point for anyone wishing to learn about Garganta de los Montes through its architectural history: four distinct styles feature in the description of the same building.
Next to the church stands the bronze sculpture “Altarera”. It honours the women of Garganta and the tradition of creating altars for Corpus Christi. A local Corpus Christi tradition involves setting up altars in various parts of the town. On Plaza de San Pedro, there is also a preserved potro de herrar, a historic shoeing stock. The sculpture, the festival tradition and the shoeing stock each offer a different connection to the area’s heritage: community tradition, public art and traditional work.
Hiking routes by duration and difficulty
The Camino de El Cuadrón runs from Garganta de los Montes to El Cuadrón. It is 4.5 kilometres long, takes 1 hour 30 minutes and is classed as easy. The Camino de La Ermita is also 4.5 kilometres long and takes 1 hour 30 minutes; it is a circular route starting and ending in Garganta de los Montes and is also classed as easy. Their matching distance and duration highlight the difference in their routes: one ends in El Cuadrón, while the other loops back to its starting point.
The Subida al Mondalindo takes considerably longer: it runs from Garganta de los Montes to Mondalindo, is 9.5 kilometres long and takes 4 hours. It is classed as difficult. The three routes therefore differ in both duration and difficulty; the two 4.5-kilometre routes are not alternatives with the same rating as the Subida al Mondalindo. As trail conditions can change, check the conditions on the route before setting out.
More activities in El Cuadrón
El Cuadrón is home to the Centro de educación ambiental Valle del Lozoya. The centre offers ecotourism routes, workshops, courses, talks and exhibitions; it also has a permanent exhibition. This means that both walks and educational and exhibition activities are among the possible interests to explore during your stay. These activities differ from the municipal hiking routes in their focus on environmental education and exhibitions.
The hermitage and revived traditions
The present-day Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Prados stands on the site of a former 17th-century chapel dedicated to the Virgen de los Prados. The chapel had disappeared by the early 19th century. The construction of the present-day hermitage brought traditions such as the Romería de la Virgen de los Prados back to life. The sequence of the former chapel, its disappearance and the revival of traditions is part of this place’s history.
The Romería de Nuestra Señora de los Prados features a pilgrim’s mass, jota dancing and caldereta. The festival brings together religious and cultural elements without requiring a fixed order for individual events. Together with the Corpus Christi tradition, it offers another way to discover Garganta de los Montes: along with architectural history and landscape, longstanding community customs also play a part.
