Miraflores de la Sierra combines protected landscapes with a town centre where you can discover fountains, churches and traces of the poet Vicente Aleixandre. There are also trails through the surrounding area and a cultural programme that runs throughout the year. You can tailor your trip to the great outdoors, the historic townscape or a recurring festival.
Landscape and trails around Miraflores
Miraflores de la Sierra is part of the Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama and the protected Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares. For a nature-focused stay, the Fuente del Cura recreation area offers a practical starting point: it is located on the M-611 between Miraflores and Rascafría, next to the town centre. There are trails, a kiosk, car parks, tables, benches, rubbish bins, containers and a fountain.
The marked routes vary in length and difficulty. The SL 03-1 Ruta al pinar de Aguirre por la Berrocosa is 7.5 kilometres long, rated easy and listed as taking around one hour and 30 minutes. The SL 02-1 Antiguo Camino de la Nieve to La Parada del Rey is longer at 9.9 kilometres and is classified as moderate. If comparing routes, you can use these details as a guide; an approximate duration is also provided for the first route. Check the current signs and trail conditions before setting out.
Another option is the Ascensión a La Najarra SL-04. It leads to the Puerto de la Morcuera at an altitude of 1,796 metres. The route also follows the northern ridge of La Najarra; a geodetic marker on the ridge stands at an altitude of 2,105 metres. The Fuente del Cura–Hueco de San Blas cycling route is approximately 24.5 kilometres long, with a rideability index of 100 percent. Those wishing to observe wildlife and plants along the way can also take the Fuente del Cura–Parada del Rey–Fuente del Cura route. Ibex are easy to spot at higher elevations, and griffon vultures are also among the area's notable birds. Wildlife sightings may vary.
Fountains, buildings and the Paseo Aleixandrino
The Paseo Aleixandrino begins in the town centre at Plaza de España and follows in the footsteps of Vicente Aleixandre. Around the bronze replica of the famous century-old poplar tree of Miraflores de la Sierra, you can read his poem “El Álamo.” The installation is also a symbol of the municipality. Another site with literary and historical connections is the Fuente Nueva: the fountain was built in 1791 in the Baroque style from dressed granite blocks.
The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is also part of the historic townscape. It is an example of late Gothic architecture and is associated with the House of Infantado. The Gruta de Nuestra Señora de Begoña is an open-air chapel built around a natural rock, with an altar, gardens, ponds and sculptural groups. The Comunidad de Madrid has recognised it as a site of tourist interest. As visiting arrangements may change, check access options before visiting.
Another glimpse into local history can be found at the Fuente de los Borricos: it was once a resting place for forestry workers and their animals on the way back from work. The ruins of the Molino de Salustiano can be reached via the restored bridge over the River Miraflores. As the condition of the bridge may change, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out.
Culture and recurring events
The Teatro Auditorio Centro de Arte Villa de Miraflores hosts theatre performances, concerts, dance, recitals, talks and conferences throughout the year. The programme changes, so if your visit depends on an event, check the current listings. The season can also play a part in planning: every year on 3 February, the San Blas tradition includes a pilgrimage to the Humilladero de San Blas. February also sees the Gran día de la Matanza del Cerdo, where various pork products are prepared and sampled. In November, the Muestra Gastronómica de la Caza y las Setas features dishes from local restaurateurs.
The history of summer stays includes La Colonia: since the last quarter of the 19th century, well-known hotels and villas were built there for summer visitors. This historical legacy adds another perspective on the town to today's travel interests. Whether nature trails, architectural history, cultural events or a seasonal occasion is your main focus, Miraflores de la Sierra offers a range of themes that you can prioritise when planning your stay.
