Reddish, clay-rich soils, vineyards and olive groves shape the landscape of Belmonte de Tajo. There are also wooded areas, trails with different focuses and a strong winemaking tradition. When planning your trip, it is worth taking a closer look at this mix: the landscape offers discoveries of its own, while the church, Passion play and local food culture reveal other sides of the town.

Open slopes and wooded countryside

The Dehesa de Valdecabañas covers about 183 hectares of gently sloping terrain and extends southwest of the town towards Colmenar de Oreja. Aleppo pines, olive trees, vines, holm oaks and Pyrenean oaks grow there. El Horcajo offers a different landscape: this wooded area of special scenic interest covers about 127 hectares and includes slopes, embankments and undulating terrain. Tree species found there include Pyrenean oaks, holm oaks and kermes oaks. The area also has a stream and a spring. It opens in a U-shape to the west, and the stream drains into La Veguilla. The landscape can thus be explored through clear contrasts: the Dehesa is characterized by gentle slopes and a mix of trees and vines, while El Horcajo is defined by woodland, varied terrain and water.

On foot and by bike

The Ruta del Horcajo is a 7-kilometre circular trail of low to moderate difficulty and is considered suitable for all user groups. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out. The Paseo de las Fuentes offers a different experience: this tree-lined walking path passes stone water troughs of historical and ethnographic interest; it also has benches and wooden swings. For the Ruta del Horcajo, the length and difficulty are useful planning details, while the Paseo de las Fuentes focuses on the water troughs and path amenities.

Cycling routes are also available in different lengths. BTT Los Manantiales has a long route of 70 kilometres and a short one of 45 kilometres. The Los Manantiales cycling routes follow fully rideable roads and paths through attractive landscapes with springs and wells. At 45 and 70 kilometres, the two options offer clearly distinct distances. These details make it possible to compare the route lengths without specifying a particular journey time.

Church, Passion play and festival square

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella was built in the 16th century. It is constructed of natural stone and masonry, and the cornice of the bell tower features ball ornaments. This detail adds a distinctive feature of the tower to the description of its building materials.

La Pasión de Belmonte de Tajo is an open-air performance of the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, held in the Plaza de la Constitución. It comprises 14 scenes at six different locations around the town hall square. The first staging of the Passion play took place in 1994. If you would like to plan your trip around the performance, check the current dates in advance. During the patron saint festivities in May, the Plaza de la Constitución also becomes a bullring, hosting competitions and bullfighting events.

Winemaking and local food culture

Winemaking is a tradition in Belmonte de Tajo, which is one of the Comunidad de Madrid’s leading wine tourism destinations. A winery located in the town centre is among the region’s first associations of affiliated farmers. Visitors can learn about the winemaking process at a large production winery; check in advance what visitor options are available. One winery is also considered a pioneer in producing organic wines in the Comunidad de Madrid.

Hornazo is part of the local food culture. Families and friends head to the countryside to eat this traditional pastry, decorated with hard-boiled eggs and anise. Together with the winemaking tradition, it offers a culinary perspective on Belmonte de Tajo that goes beyond choosing between a circular walk and a cycling tour.
