Rivas-Vaciamadrid brings together a landscape of lagoons, archaeological history, and public cultural offerings. In the protected Parque Regional del Sureste, trails run alongside rivers and wetlands; elsewhere, an Iron Age settlement, an amphitheater, and seasonal events take center stage. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests rather than limiting your discoveries to a single theme.

Nature and trails in the Parque Regional del Sureste

Part of the municipality of Rivas-Vaciamadrid lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste. Its habitats include cliffs, river plains, and lagoons, which are home to diverse wildlife and especially abundant birdlife. In the section of the park in Rivas, the Laguna del Campillo and the Laguna de Soto de las Juntas are among the protected wetlands. The park is accessible by metro, including from the Rivas Vaciamadrid station. Check the current metro timetable before traveling.

For birdwatching, the Paseo por el Soto de Las Juntas runs parallel to the Jarama and Manzanares rivers; lagoons along the trail offer opportunities for wildlife observation. Around the Laguna de El Campillo, there is a peaceful walk of more than five kilometers below the cliffs. A separate, accessible 1.2-kilometer trail runs along the southern shore of the lagoon, near an environmental education center. The different trail lengths help you decide how much walking to plan; confirm current conditions before your visit.

Other trails have different points of interest. The Senda botánica de Mazalmadrit passes through a range of ecosystems. A linear trail just over twelve kilometers long leads to the cliffs of El Piul, a natural viewpoint overlooking the Jarama floodplain and the lagoons of El Campillo and Velilla. It is not described as a loop. Those interested in the region’s history can choose the three-kilometer loop to the trenches of the Battle of the Jarama. On the guided route, you can explore fortifications, observation posts, trenches, and parapets dating from the fighting in February 1937. Check the current regulations for the route in advance.

Archaeology and cultural venues

The Yacimiento Carpetano MiralrĂo preserves a settlement from the Second Iron Age, dating from between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC, that is open to visitors. Highlights include covered foundation remains and a full-scale reconstruction of a Carpetanian hearth. Visits are available by prior appointment; groups range from eight to 20 people. Arrange your visit in advance.

Another way to explore the past is the loop trail to the trenches. Unlike the archaeological site, this route combines walking with the history of the fighting in 1937. For an outing focused on art and events, Rivas offers other options: most of its urban art was created as part of the Concurso de Arte Urbano, held every September as part of the Festival de Cultura en la Calle. The Fiestas de Rivas include major concerts at the Auditorio Miguel Ríos; in the Casco Antiguo, the program features children’s shows and communal traditional meals. Check event dates and access rules before traveling.

The Auditorio Miguel RĂos is an amphitheater built into a hillside for musical and theatrical events. For environmental education, the Centro de Recursos Ambientales Chico Mendes offers activities, courses, and programs for schools and the people of Rivas. Guided group visits may include exhibitions, an ecological garden, and community composters; whether a workshop or an additional activity is also possible depends on the group and availability. Confirm the arrangements for your visit before setting out.

Local produce and viewpoints

At the Parque Agroecológico del Soto del Grillo, a local producers’ market sells produce directly to visitors; this includes products under the Producto Fresco del Soto del Grillo brand. The annual program includes open garden days and the Fiesta de Agroecología at the Chico Mendes environmental center. Check market rules, dates, and participation requirements before your visit.

The landscaped green spaces also have their own distinctive features. Parque Bellavista has a ziggurat-style viewpoint for watching the evening sky, as well as cascades, a pond, and ornamental fountains. The Torre Mirador in Parque Lineal is 23 meters high and has 129 steps; from the top, views extend across much of the city, the countryside around Morata, and the Sierra north of Madrid. The Torre Mirador in Parque Lineal is temporarily closed at present (as of August 2026). Check for current updates about the temporary closure before visiting.
