In Nuevo Baztán, a designated historic ensemble and a nature trail take center stage. The Conjunto Histórico de Nuevo Baztán is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its main area comprises the historic town center, with its buildings, streets, and squares. Those interested in architecture and local history will find a tangible starting point here; the Senda de Valmores offers a different focus, with landscapes and industrial ruins.

Architecture in the Historic Town Center

José Benito de Churriguera planned the Conjunto Histórico starting around 1709; it was built by 1713. The Iglesia de San Francisco Javier offers a closer look at its distinctive design: its floor plan follows a Greek cross, and both its towers and dome are crowned with roof structures. The church also contains altarpieces attributed to Churriguera.

The Palacio de Goyeneche also features a striking architectural detail: its square main courtyard is lined on the ground floor with round-arched arcades. The courtyard’s restoration removed architectural barriers and provides visitors with safe access. The “Nuevo Baztán Imprescindible” route takes you on foot through the monumental ensemble and to its most notable civic buildings. It thus focuses on the town’s architectural history, while the Senda de Valmores foregrounds landscape and nature.

Industrial History at the Centro de Interpretación

The Centro de Interpretación de Nuevo Baztán is located in the former wine cellar of the industrial complex. Its exhibition focuses on the historic industries that developed in Nuevo Baztán and its surrounding area. Models, explanatory panels, and reproductions of objects provide a range of insights. The exhibition is complemented by an audiovisual program about the lives of Goyeneche and his architect, Churriguera.

The Centro also offers workshops for children and adults. They cover making scented soaps, shaping glass, and producing handmade paper. If you would like to plan a workshop, check availability for your visit dates in advance.

On Foot: Monumental Ensemble or Nature Trail

The Senda de Valmores is an easy circular nature trail that begins in the historic town center. It is listed as 5.00 kilometers long, with a duration of 150 minutes. This time estimate can help you plan the trail as a separate part of your day. Along the way, plateaus and downy oak forests meet the ruins of former factories and fulling mills.

The trail passes through the biodiverse Valmores Valley. Birds of prey can be spotted there, while century-old holm oaks provide shade. The two routes therefore differ not only in theme: “Nuevo Baztán Imprescindible” takes you to civic buildings in the monumental ensemble, while the Senda de Valmores leads through valley and woodland landscapes marked by traces of former industry. Which route is a better fit for your planned stay also depends on whether you want to focus on the town’s architecture or on nature.

Visitor Information

Admission to the Centro de Interpretación is free. It is accessible to most people with physical, mental, or sensory disabilities; check the accessibility information before your visit. Groups must arrange access in advance. A group may have no more than 30 people and must be accompanied by a responsible person. Parking is available on the streets adjoining the historic town center.
