Gargantilla del Lozoya combines protected heritage, annual festival dates, and trails through higher terrain. The Ermita de Santiago is 1.5 kilometres from the town centre; the Iglesia San Benito Abad and the Mural de Gargantilla del Lozoya – Moxaico offer different cultural highlights. You can plan your stay around architectural history, festivals, or the landscape, depending on your interests.

Heritage and Townscape

The Ermita de Santiago is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Historic Site” category. It was designated by Decree 45/2019 of 21 May. The ermita is located at the junction of the path from Gargantilla to the mill and the Cañadilla de las Tinadas livestock trail. It is also part of the Rinconada de las Cerradillas archaeological site.

The Iglesia San Benito Abad was rebuilt in 1943 over the ruins of an earlier 16th-century church. Its bell gable has two sound openings; the entrance atrium is built of granite and has a semicircular arch. The church thus brings together the history of its reconstruction and distinctive architectural details.

The Mural de Gargantilla del Lozoya – Moxaico depicts Juana de Castilla, known as “La Beltraneja,” against a background in muted colours. Its design alludes to the flag of Castile. Lettering framed by an abstract design evokes a medieval coffered ceiling. The mural thus combines a portrait with references to history and architecture.

Festivals on Three Dates

On 21 March, a festival is held in honour of San Benito Abad, the patron saint, featuring a mass and procession. Traditional music with gaita and a Segovian drum is part of the celebration. During the pilgrimage on 5 July, the brotherhood processes to Las Fuentecillas; the event also includes various activities, children’s games, and a raffle. The summer festivals take place in the village square on the third weekend in August, with children’s games, fancy dress, and music.

The three dates spread the celebrations throughout the year and differ in form: from the festival in honour of the patron saint to the pilgrimage and the summer festivals in the village square. If one of these events is a deciding factor in your trip, check the programme for the relevant year in advance.

Landscape and Trails

The municipality is home to oaks, ash trees, holm oaks, and Pyrenean oaks; natural meadows are also part of the landscape. The section of the Vuelta al Cerro de la Cruz route near Gargantilla passes through higher terrain with oak forests and open areas. From the higher ground, there are sweeping views across the valley. A path then leads to a trail towards Gargantilla. If you turn towards Gargantilla, the route passes through Los Collados. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Getting There from Madrid

The journey from Madrid is about 80 kilometres. It follows the A-1 to Lozoyuela, then the M-604. At Puente Taboada, the road crosses the RĂo Lozoya, passes the viaduct, and goes through a tunnel. Then turn right onto the M-634, which leads to Gargantilla del Lozoya. As road conditions and signage can change, check both before travelling.

Festival dates and the landscape route can offer different focal points when choosing your stay: the festival days provide specific dates for planning, while the Vuelta al Cerro de la Cruz describes a trail through woodland, open areas, and higher viewpoints. The historic buildings add a distinct cultural focus to these options.
