A 14-kilometre former railway line runs from Carabaña to Estremera, while the Vía Verde del Tajuña passes through the town at kilometre 29. There are also the original springs at La Mina and the Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora. If you choose Carabaña for a stay, you can focus on cycling and walking routes, the landscape or local history.

Cycling and walking routes with different highlights

The Vía Verde del tren de los 40 días is a former railway line adapted for cycling and walking. It runs for 14 kilometres from Carabaña to Estremera. The Vía Verde del Tajuña passes through Carabaña at kilometre 29 and climbs gently there towards Orusco. Running parallel to the left bank of the Tajuña, it passes through poplar groves, vineyards, olive groves and farmland.

The choice of route comes down to a clear distinction: the length and endpoints are specified for the Vía Verde del tren de los 40 días, while the Vía Verde del Tajuña is described in terms of its river course, cultural landscape and gradient. You can therefore decide whether a route with a clearly stated distance or a description of the landscape and route is more important to you. A path also branches off the Vía Verde southwest of the town centre. It runs among olive trees, almond trees and aromatic plants, giving it its own distinctive landscape.

The original springs at La Mina

Carabaña’s original springs are in La Mina, on the southwestern slope of Cerro de Cabeza Gorda, beside the stream or ravine course of the Salina. A route description from 2017 gives two access points: kilometre 3.3 of the M-231 between Carabaña and Villarejo de Salvanés, or kilometre 7.8 of the M-704 between Tielmes and Carabaña. From there, a turn-off crosses the Tajuña, followed by a further 1.5 kilometres to the old springs. Check road access and access to the property before visiting.

The Aguas de Carabaña baths are also among the area’s notable water sites: they are carved into the rock, and their water comes from the La Favorita spring at the foot of Cerro de la Cabeza Gorda. The original springs and the baths tell different stories about water in Carabaña and its surroundings.

Church and industrial history

The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora dates from before the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century by Bartolomé Bustamante. Its interior has three naves, divided by ten Ionic columns. “Three-naved” refers to the division of the church interior into three naves; the columns make this spatial arrangement tangible.

The La Favorita natural mineral water complex includes a bottling factory dating from the late 19th century and the small Chávarri railway halt from the early 20th century. Bottled water was dispatched from this halt. The complex is closed to the public, so it cannot be included as an open-to-the-public visit.

Olive oil, tradition and the local landscape

The Cooperativa de Aceite de Oliva Santa Lucía produces extra virgin olive oil from Cornicabra, Manzanilla, Gordal and Carrasqueño olives. A regional travel guide lists weekend opening hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for its shop, which sells directly to the public. Check whether these opening hours are still valid before visiting.

Carabaña’s Passion of Christ pageant is one of the traditions associated with Good Friday; performances date back to 1988. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year, as Good Friday moves with the date of Easter.

La Isla is a natural area that for decades was one of the local population’s favourite places for recreation and leisure. Together with the vineyards, olive groves and poplar groves along the Vía Verde del Tajuña, it offers another historically shaped perspective on Carabaña’s landscape.
