Several signposted hiking trails give Brea de Tajo a clear focus on outdoor activities. One specifically named route is the Ruta de las Campiñas de Brea de Tajo: it follows the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental and is listed as 19.09 km long. There are also other signposted trails, so hiking is not limited to this one route.
Hiking Trails Through Landscapes and Pastoral History
The trails pass through landscapes with centuries-old holm oaks, oaks, and the native El Zumaque. This plant was once used for tanning leather and making dyes; the trails therefore also reveal a history of local use. Historic shepherds’ huts and livestock pens along the routes point to transhumance. For those seeking culture beyond buildings, this offers a different point of reference: landscape, pastoral farming, and traditional uses come together in the same thematic selection.
The Church and Its Architectural History
A particular highlight is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la AsunciĂłn. The neoclassical building was declared a monument by the Comunidad de Madrid on June 25, 1997. Its architectural history must be distinguished from that of the earlier church: in the 16th century, it was known as Santa MarĂa la Mayor and featured Gothic and Renaissance influences. Its three-section tower, the baptistery with its ribbed vault, and the baptismal font have been preserved.
The church also preserves wall paintings by Ginés de Andrés Aguirre. They depict the Church Fathers in the vault’s pendentives. The remains of the oldest organ façade in the Comunidad de Madrid are also here. This makes it possible to distinguish the neoclassical parish church, older surviving architectural elements, and other artistic features all in one place.
The Former Olive Oil Mill
The Museo Oleico La Almazara is housed in the only surviving olive oil mill among the several mills that once operated in Brea de Tajo. Its machinery room preserves millstones, a mixer, a press, a boiler, motors, and settling tanks. The museum also features an extensive exhibition of agricultural tools and household objects. While the church brings together architectural history and religious art, the museum focuses on olive oil production and objects from agriculture and domestic life.
Golf Practice and Practical Information
The Centro Deportivo Seve Ballesteros is located in the town center and offers 2,000 square meters for golf practice. Facilities include areas for putting, chipping, approach shots, bunker practice, and a tee line. Hiking through the cultural landscape and a golf offering with several practice areas are therefore available as distinct activity options.
For travelers with motorhomes, the Mirador del Sur parking area offers parking spaces, electrical hookups, facilities for disposing of wastewater and fresh water, and a children’s playground. Check local operating conditions before setting out.
