Ciempozuelos offers travelers two distinctive themes: a landscape of wetlands and riverside woodland, and ecclesiastical architecture and archaeological finds. The municipality lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste and is included in the Red Natura 2000 network. The park’s protected wetlands include the Lagunas de Ciempozuelos. In this area, seasonal lagoons, irrigated farmland and riverside woodland alternate; more than 200 bird species have been observed there.

Nature and Routes

One route leads from the town center to the banks of the Jarama River. An easy circular route passes around hills and cereal fields and goes by some olive groves. An appealing circular walk with very little elevation change takes you to some of the municipality’s most interesting places. These descriptions offer different points of reference for planning: one route has separate starting and ending points, while the circular routes focus on the landscape and the route itself. For cyclists, CiclaMadrid stage 17, “Parque del Sureste y Paisaje Cultural de Aranjuez,” also passes through Ciempozuelos.

Churches and Religious History

Construction of the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena began in the late 15th or early 16th century. In the 17th century, a Baroque brick apse was added. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo offers a different architectural style: its simple Baroque façade features elements of classical architecture, while the dome above the altar is decorated with religious paintings dating from 1707.

The Convento de Santa Clara dates back to 1609 and is the oldest religious foundation in Ciempozuelos. The Iglesia de Las Clarisas, in turn, has an exterior façade in a simple Baroque style from the first half of the 17th century. There, red brick contrasts with white stone around the doorframes and lintels. The Congregation Museum of the Oblates preserves the room of the founder, Antonia María de Oviedo Schöntal. In the left-hand section of the church, visitors can also see the Panteón de los Fundadores, with the sarcophagi of San Benito Menni, Sor Josefa Recio and Sor Angustias Giménez.

Fundación Hospitalarias has created the “Tras las huellas de San Benito Menni” route. It invites visitors to explore places associated with San Benito Menni and the founders of the Hermanas Hospitalarias, María Josefa Recio and María Angustias Giménez. Guided tours offer insights into the municipality’s history and culture, as well as its emblematic sites.

Archaeology and Exhibitions

The Ciempozuelos Bell Beaker vessel was part of a group of ceramics that included a casserole dish and a bowl. The pieces were discovered in 1894 and 1895 during the construction of the road from Cuesta de la Reina to San Martín de la Vega, now the M-404. The Casa de la Cultura houses a permanent exhibition on the Bronze Age and “El Vaso Campaniforme.” The Ciempozuelos Bell Beaker vessel itself is currently on display at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional; check its current exhibition status before visiting.

An exhibition about Las Salinas Espartinas was announced as a permanent exhibition at the Biblioteca Municipal Almudena Grandes, Calle Colegiata 3, on November 7, 2025. Check whether it is currently open to visitors before going.
