Colmenar del Arroyo combines an unusual defensive structure with ecclesiastical and industrial heritage, trails, and seasonal food and cultural events. The town offers several different ways to plan your stay: explore its buildings and milling history, or focus on hiking trails and events.
Defensive Structures, Churches and Bridges
About two kilometres northeast of the town centre stands Blockhouse 13, a reinforced-concrete fortification. Its main structure measures ten metres in diameter and is complemented by four smaller firing positions. Blockhouse 13 is the only completed fortification of this type in the Community of Madrid and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a Renaissance church dating from between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Its features include a coffered ceiling, a Baroque altarpiece, several carved wooden sculptures and a 17th-century baptismal font. Only the espadaña (bell gable) of the former Iglesia de San Vicente remains; the church itself was built between the 12th and 13th centuries.
The Puente del Caño and Puente de la Fragua can also be distinguished by their construction: the Puente del Caño is a stone bridge built from ashlar masonry and stone, with two semicircular arches. The Puente de la Fragua is built from ashlar and rubble masonry and has a single semicircular arch.
Mills and Industrial Heritage
Three watermills stand along the Corralizo stream within the municipality. Today they are ruins and are considered of tourist or educational interest. Check access conditions locally if you are planning a visit.
Only the mill shaft itself remains of the Molino de El Cubo: its interior is made of large ashlar stones, while the exterior is faced with rubble masonry. At the Molino de Retes, the millrace, mill shaft and part of the adjacent outbuilding remain. The Molino de Las Viñas may be the oldest of the three mills; some of its roughly worked ashlar stones appear to have come from another structure. The Potro de Herrar (traditional shoeing frame) is also part of Colmenar del Arroyo’s ethnographic and industrial heritage.
Trails and Nature
Colmenar del Arroyo has eleven routes and trails. Two belong to the Community of Madrid’s Sendas Verdes network, including the Senda de la Dehesa de Navalmoral and the Senda Circuito Paseo de Colmenar del Arroyo. There are also urban and hiking routes suitable for walking, horse riding and cycling.
One specific example is the watermill route along the Arroyo de Colmenar: this moderately difficult circular hike is twelve kilometres long, has an elevation gain of about 120 metres and takes around three and a half hours to walk. As signs and trail conditions can change, check both before setting out.
Colmenar del Arroyo lies within the ZEPA 56 Special Protection Area for Birds and is part of the Cuenca del rĂo Alberche y Cofio Biosphere Reserve. Griffon vultures, lesser kestrels, rock buntings, orioles and tawny owls can be spotted in the area. Such sightings vary and are seasonal.

Every year, usually in January, Colmenar del Arroyo takes part in the Ruta del Garbanzo Madrileño. The weekend menu includes a dish featuring chickpeas from Garbancera Madrileña as its main ingredient, accompanied by a wine from the D.O. Vinos de Madrid. Check the dates and participating establishments for the relevant year.
