Villa Del Prado reveals itself through historic religious buildings, winegrowing and the landscape along the Río Alberche. This combination can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: local history, wine-related visits, or time on the trails and by the river. Some experiences are tied to a specific date or visiting arrangements; others are permanent features of the town.
Churches, History and Getting Your Bearings
The Gothic Church of Santiago Apóstol dates from the 15th century and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Baroque Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Poveda, dating from the 17th century, houses the image of the town’s patron saint. The second chamber of the Herrerian-style bell tower displays liturgical objects, including chalices, patens, reliquaries and priestly vestments. Check the visiting arrangements before your visit.
The Museo del Vino en Villa del Prado is located at Plaza Mayor 1. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them in advance. The Oficina de Turismo is on Calle Nuestra Señora de la Poveda, on the ground floor of the Centro Cultural Pedro de Tolosa next to Plaza Mayor; confirm the location before you arrive.
Festivals and Regional Specialties
The Día de la Caridad de la Virgen de la Poveda takes place on Easter Monday, after Mass at the town church, in the area around the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Poveda. The festival includes a pilgrimage to the Ermita, an open-air Mass and the distribution of bread. Residents also perform three human towers in honor of the Virgin. The day’s traditional food is Empaná: sweet bread dough filled with pieces of chorizo.
The Feria Huerta y Vino takes place every year in Plaza Mayor. The program includes wine tastings, tomato and olive oil tastings, and wine tourism activities. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the date and program for your travel year.
Experience Winegrowing
A visit to Bodega Vinos de la Poveda offers an opportunity to learn about the winemaking process, taste some wines and explore the nearby vineyards on foot. The bodega’s current building was constructed in 1963. Confirm the visiting arrangements in advance.
Bodega Sampedro is a family winery with origins in the 19th century; its vineyards include some century-old vines. The winery began offering wine tourism experiences in 2021, including guided tours and tastings. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit. Vermouth is also part of the winery’s history: since 2019, it has made a sweet white vermouth using a family recipe.
Trails and Landscape Along the Alberche
The Río Alberche irrigates the vineyards, olive groves and vegetable-growing areas of Villa del Prado. Along the riverbank, the water is clear and suitable for swimming, and there are white sandy beaches. Check local conditions before swimming. The Camino vecinal a Pelayos de La Presa passes through hilly countryside with native holm oaks, rockroses and pines. This is distinct from the route along the disused railway line, which is in the El Gurugú municipal nature park.
For planning a bike ride, the seventh stage of the TransCAM offers another perspective: it runs from Griñón to Villa del Prado, crossing the Guadarrama and Alberche rivers along the way. A different kind of outing was the guided Las Fuentes walk in the autumn 2025 program: it was designed as an easy circular route of 4.75 kilometers with 60 meters of cumulative elevation gain, and introduces the history and cultural heritage of Villa del Prado. Check the route details locally before setting out.
