A former home and studio, a listed architectural complex and a centuries-old wine tradition offer different ways to experience Sitges’ culture. These are complemented by festivals with fixed patron saint feast days, beaches and water sports. For planning, it helps to distinguish between these highlights: art history can be explored through different styles, while Carnaval and Festa Major fall at different points in the annual calendar.

Art and Architecture Through the Ages

The Museu del Cau Ferrat was established in 1893 by Santiago Rusiñol as a home and studio, and became a public museum in 1933. The events Rusiñol organized there with artists, musicians and writers made the house a “temple of Modernisme.” Maricel offers a different artistic perspective: Miquel Utrillo built the artistic and monumental complex between 1910 and 1918 for Charles Deering. It is considered one of the early major examples of Noucentisme.

The listed complex comprises the Palau de Maricel, the Museu de Maricel and Can Rocamora. Inside the Palau, different styles and materials come together in a distinctly modernist design; outside, there is a cloister and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. The Maricel buildings thus bring together different architectural influences without reducing them to a single style.

The Museu Romàntic Can Llopis is housed in a neoclassical building dating from 1793. Dioramas there illustrate everyday life and popular traditions of the 19th century. The Fundació Stämpfli collection offers another perspective on art: it comprises more than 90 works by 60 artists from 22 nationalities. Together, these examples show how architecture, everyday history and an internationally diverse art collection can offer different ways to explore during a stay.

Festivals and Annual Events

The Carnaval de Sitges is recognized as a festival of national tourist interest and takes place in the week before Ash Wednesday. Its date therefore depends on the calendar for each year. The Festa Major de Sitges is recognized as a festival of national heritage interest and is celebrated in honor of Sant Bartomeu on August 24 and Santa Tecla on September 23. These dates provide two specific points of reference when planning a stay around the patron saint festivals.

The Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya also has a long history: it began in 1968 as an international week of fantasy and horror films. The festival program varies each year. If you want to plan your trip around Carnaval or the festival, check the dates for your preferred travel year.

Malvasia and the Regional Landscape

Malvasia de Sitges is a distinctive local grape variety. For decades, it was produced in the wine cellar of Hospital Sant Joan Baptista. The Centre d'Interpretació de la Malvasia de Sitges is located in the former Corral de la Vila, a livestock building dating from the 18th century. The subject of wine thus connects a local grape variety with a historic building and its former use.

In the wider region around Sitges, Parc del Garraf offers Mediterranean scenery with viewpoints and walking routes. Jardins de Terramar offers a different focus: designed in the Noucentisme style, the gardens were laid out in the 1920s with the involvement of Miquel Utrillo. The gardens are also suitable for family visits, walks, picnics and enjoying the vegetation. As access and visiting conditions may change, check them before planning a specific visit.

Beach and Water Activities

Platja de l'Estanyol is 366 meters long. It is an urban, family-friendly beach on the promenade in front of the Vinyet neighborhood. Beach services may vary seasonally, so bear this in mind if your plans depend on them.

Stand-up paddleboarding, surfing and kayaking are available in Sitges. Other options include renting sailboats with or without a skipper, renting jet skis and attending nautical schools. This selection covers both activities on the water and options that include instruction or a boat. Providers and availability may change; check the latest information if you plan to include any of these activities in your trip.
