At the foot of the Sant Llorenç del Munt massif lies Sant Llorenç Savall. Medieval buildings, Romanesque chapels and distinctive natural features give visitors a variety of things to discover. Further into the natural park, reddish conglomerate cliffs and monoliths contrast with pine and holm oak forests on the slopes and in mountain ravines.
Natural Features and Landscapes
A striking tree is El Pi de les Quatre Besses: its four symmetrical branches divide at a low height, and the tree stands approximately 25 metres tall. It is classified as a monumental tree. La Font de Cal Llogari offers a different kind of landscape. There, a spring, basins, irrigation channels for garden plots and the riverside woodland along the Ripoll River come together.
The caves of the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac massif also shape the natural landscape. La Cova Simanya is one of the larger and deeper of the 300 recorded caves. The information about the tree, spring and cave represents different aspects of nature: a remarkable individual tree, water and garden landscapes, and the massif’s cave system.
Castle Ruins, Manor Houses and Chapels
Castell de Pera is a medieval castle ruin on a hill at an altitude of 743 metres. The site’s origins are documented at least as far back as a reference from 978. Those interested in the history of the area can compare this early reference with later buildings: El Marquet de les Roques is a historicist, Neo-Romanesque manor house from the late 19th century. It was built over a farmhouse dating from the beginning of the 13th century.
The La Pahissa del Marquet cultural centre offers a continuous programme of exhibitions and artistic, literary, musical, educational and leisure activities. Among the religious buildings, Sant Feliu de Vallcàrcara stands out for its early history: the church was built in the mid-10th century and served as the parish church for the area’s scattered farmsteads. Sant Jaume de Vallverd is a small Romanesque chapel built in the early 12th century on the upper reaches of the Mascarell stream.
Further architectural history links Sant Pere with El Dalmau. The 11th-century Romanesque chapel of Sant Pere stands beside the manor house and served the farming families of Vall de Mur for their religious needs. El Dalmau preserves original features from the 16th to 18th centuries, including sundials. El Daví, in turn, is a medieval manor house with a ground floor, upper floor and attic, set in a rugged, remote landscape.
Trails and Nature Education
For information on the length and duration of a trail, the SL-C 56 Castillo de Pera route offers specific details: it starts at the bridge of La Muntada in Sant Llorenç Savall, is about 6.5 kilometres long and is listed as taking two hours. PR-C 145 is listed among the park’s short hiking trails as the Sendero de Sant Llorenç Savall. This puts a route with a stated distance and duration alongside a trail designated as short, without transferring the first route’s duration to the second.
La Muntada is a nature education facility offering educational activities and a meeting point for experiencing the surroundings of Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. Ecological and socially oriented winemaking is also carried out there, producing the wine 5 quarteres. Nature education and winemaking are two distinct aspects of the place, alongside its buildings and trails.
Festivals in May
The events calendar features two named dates in May. At the Pi de Maig, held every year on 1 May, a large tree is erected in the main square. The Fira de Sant Ponç takes place on 11 May and is associated with medicinal herbs and the beekeeping tradition. It also features food stalls and craftspeople from the area and beyond. Comparing the two festivals highlights their different focuses: the Pi de Maig centres on the tree tradition, while the Fira brings together herbs, beekeeping, food and crafts.
