Malgrat de Mar combines more than 4.5 kilometres of equipped white-sand beaches with a landscape stretching between the sea, the eastern hills, the Montnegre Massif, and the Tordera River and its delta. The town’s landscapes include the alluvial plain and beaches, as well as the hills and slopes of Montnegre. This offers different ways to plan your trip, with a focus on the coast, nature trails or local history.

Beach, nature and trails

The Playa, Pla de Grau y Delta del Tordera walk passes through the town’s agricultural area, the dunes at La Conca Beach and the Tordera Delta. It takes in several different landscapes rather than focusing on the beach alone. A watchtower along the route in the area of La Punta del Tordera Beach is used for observing birds and ducks.

Parc del Castell offers a different view over the town: set on a hill, it provides a panorama of the municipality. Here, the focus is on taking in Malgrat de Mar as a whole, while the Playa, Pla de Grau y Delta del Tordera walk links agricultural land, dunes and the delta.

Parks and different routes

Giant figures with childlike themes shape the look of Parc Francesc MaciĂ ; they reach heights of up to five metres. The park is fully accessible, with gentle, easy-to-navigate paths free of barriers. If accessibility is important to your plans, check the current conditions before visiting, as facilities may change.

The routes offer distinct options: the Malgrat de Mar to Palafolls section of the Tourdera Route can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. The TurĂł d'en Serra y Minas de Can Palomeres walk, by contrast, is of moderate difficulty because it involves an elevation change over a short distance. The mines must not be entered because they are dangerous. This restriction should be taken into account when planning the walk.

Buildings and local history

The present-day Església Parroquial de Sant Nicolau was completed in 1783. Its nave is 45 metres long and 24 metres wide, and it is known as the “Catedral de la Costa.” Its dimensions and name make it a landmark in the town’s history.

The Casal dels Clapers was built at the end of the 16th century as a manor house and residence of the noble Clapers family. In 1998, the building was converted into the Biblioteca Municipal La Cooperativa. Another historical landmark is the Torre del Castell, documented in records since 1382 and associated with the Castillo de Palafolls. Together, these buildings reflect different periods in Malgrat de Mar’s history: a manor house from the late 16th century, a church completed in the 18th century and a tower with a documented history dating back to the 14th century.

Getting there and festival season

Malgrat de Mar railway station is opposite Malgrat Centro Beach. From there, connections run to Barcelona and its metropolitan area, to Girona and as far as the French border. Check the timetable and connections for your intended travel date before setting off.

The Fiesta Mayor de Sant Roc is Malgrat de Mar’s main summer festival. It culminates on Saint Roch’s feast day, 16 August. If the festival is important to your stay, check the specific dates and programme in advance.
