In Gelida, the history of the castle meets scenic views, routes through the town and its surrounding natural areas, and a varied calendar of festivals. When planning your visit, you can choose different areas of focus: historic sites, outdoor activities or a visit during one of the festival dates. The railway’s history is also part of the picture—with an important caveat for anyone planning to take the funicular.
Castell de Gelida and railway history
Castell de Gelida has been documented since 945. It was part of a line of fortifications that controlled the Penedès—a border region where the Catalan counties and Al-Andalus met. Today, the castle is classified as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN), a Cultural Asset of National Interest. The complex also includes the church of Sant Pere, first mentioned in 998. The two dates mark different stages in the complex’s history: the castle’s early documentation and the church’s first mention.
The railway tradition can be explored in more detail at the Centre d'Interpretació del funicular de Gelida. Historical objects from the line and video footage from earlier times are on display there; visitors can watch the videos on the funicular’s original benches. The Funicular de Gelida is currently out of service. If the railway is part of your visit plans, check its operating status before travelling and take this limitation into account when planning.
Views, walks and hiking routes
From Passeig Rosell i Massana, panoramic views extend across Anoia and Montserrat. The Ruta de los Tesoros de Gelida starts at the Centre d'InterpretaciĂł del funicular de Gelida and combines a walk through the town with its surrounding natural areas. This offers two different ways to explore: take in the landscape from the Passeig or follow a route that brings together the town and its natural surroundings.
There are five suggested hikes, with varying levels of difficulty and durations, aimed at all audiences. The duration and difficulty provide practical guidance for considering the options according to your preferences. Another option is “Las llaves del Funi”: on this digital treasure hunt, you solve puzzles on your mobile phone, explore notable places in Gelida and learn about the history of the funicular. It differs from both a walk through the town and the suggested hiking routes, with puzzles and railway history at its heart.
Choose festivals by season
Gelida’s Festa Major takes place in August. Its programme includes traditional and cultural activities, music, performances, family activities and sports. The Funifira is dedicated to the funicular, leisure activities related to the railway, local gastronomy, and the region’s wines and cavas. It takes place on the first or second weekend of November. On 13 December, the Festa de Santa Llúcia includes the serving of escudella and the Fira de Santa Llúcia, featuring handcrafted products.
The dates give each visit a different cultural focus: in August, the emphasis is on a varied programme and performances; in November, on the connection between the railway, gastronomy and regional wines and cavas; and in December, on escudella and handcrafted products. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the specific date in advance.
Plan your stay around your interests
To decide when Gelida is right for your trip, consider which theme you would like to focus on. The castle and the church of Sant Pere offer a glimpse of the town’s history; Passeig Rosell i Massana and the suggested hikes provide a different perspective. Anyone interested in the railway can explore the historical exhibits, the Funifira and the digital treasure hunt—although the funicular is currently out of service. The festival dates, meanwhile, offer clear seasonal occasions, without requiring all the activities to have the same focus.
The routes also differ in format: the Ruta de los Tesoros combines a walk through Gelida with its surrounding natural areas, while the five suggested hikes vary in difficulty and duration. “Las llaves del Funi” adds puzzles and insights into the history of the funicular. You can choose Gelida based on whether you are more interested in history, landscape, a particular festival or a combination of these themes.
