The 11th-century Castell de Saldes stands on a rocky outcrop at the foot of Pedraforca. From there, you can look out over the Saldes River valley, Cadí, Pedraforca and Serra d’Ensija. Saldes combines viewpoints like these with hiking trails and historic sites.

Hiking trails and different starting points

The “Pedraforca pel Coll del Verdet” route begins at the Refugi Lluís Estasen mountain hut. By car, it can be reached from the Mirador de Gresolet or from a point below the hut. The “Ascensió al Pedraforca des de Saldes” route begins and ends at the Centre d’Interpretació del Massís del Pedraforca. The “De Saldes a Gresolet” route offers another specific starting point: it starts at Plaça Pedraforca, passes below the Mirador de Gresolet and follows ravines along the northern slope of Pedraforca. Starting points and routes differ; check conditions before setting out on a mountain hike.

The Palomera nature trail is divided into three routes: “Riera Salada,” “Bosc de Palomera” and “Fauna de Palomera.” Along the entire trail, signs provide information about the surroundings and the effects of human use of resources. Viewpoints and suspension bridges are also part of the route. At Palomera, nature and human activity are considered together, while the Pedraforca routes focus on their respective starting points and mountain paths.

Views and nature in the Gresolet Valley

The Mirador de Gresolet consists of viewing balconies on a rocky outcrop at the foot of Pedraforca. From there, you can see the mountain, Serra d’Ensija and the eastern part of the Cadí range. The north face of Pedraforca is also visible from Gresolet. The Gresolet forest and Pedraforca are part of the Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró, founded in 1983.

A route to the monumental trees of the Gresolet Valley leads to the more accessible specimens in the Molleres and Gresolet valleys. The Avet de les Molleres de Gresolet stands at an elevation of 1,630 metres and is considered one of the tallest fir trees in Catalonia. Visitors interested in tree forms and landscapes will find a different focus here than at the viewpoints or along the trails around the massif.

There are two described ways to reach Gresolet: from the C-16, take the B-400 and then a turn onto a forest road at the start of the Saldes Bridge. From Saldes, take the B-400; after crossing the bridge, another turn leads onto a forest road. Road conditions can change; check them before driving.

Churches, settlements and historic sites

The Església Sant Martí de Saldes stands in the centre of the village. The rectangular building is divided into three naves. Feners offers a different insight into the history of settlement: documented since 1289, it retains its medieval layout despite later alterations. Two parallel rows of houses make up the village; their outer walls served as fortification walls.

The Dolmen de Molers is at an elevation of 1,225 metres in the municipality of Saldes, near Molers and a few metres from the road from Maçaners to Sales. The access path begins beside the Cal Xisquet cross on the road de l’Obaga. The monastery of Sant Sebastià del Sull offers a different historical context: it was built at the end of the 9th century as a retreat for the priest Daniel and is five kilometres from Saldes. Access is via the forest road towards Gresolet and a right turn near the Refugi Cal Ferrer mountain hut.

Gresolet is also a place where architecture and landscape can be considered together. The present-day building of the Santuari de Gresolet and the adjacent hostel were built in the 17th century. Since 1959, the sanctuary has housed a well-preserved, 55-centimetre-high polychrome wooden statue of the Mare de Déu de Gresolet, dating from the 13th century and depicting her crowned and seated on a throne.

Exhibitions and seasonal experiences

The Centre d’Interpretació del Massís del Pedraforca i de la Mineria de Saldes has a permanent exhibition about the Pedraforca massif. Twelve backlit information panels cover its fauna, flora and geology. The Centre Astronòmic del Pedraforca has an astronomical telescope, a solar telescope and a digital planetarium. The two places have different focuses: the massif’s nature and mining on the one hand, and astronomical facilities on the other.

At TULIPMANIA, the main attractions are guided tours of the flower-growing fields and the opportunity to make your own bouquet from flowers picked directly in the field. The tulip season is in spring; the dahlia season is in summer and autumn. The offer also includes workshops on planting seasonal bulbs and an astronomy activity among the tulips. As experiences are seasonal and workshops may change, check which offers are available during your travel dates before your trip.
