When planning a trip to San Celoni, it is worth choosing what to focus on: historic churches and a Gothic manor house sit alongside paths to the Tordera and the municipality’s floodplain and valley landscapes. This lets you balance architectural history and nature according to your interests.
Getting there and finding your way
The main access routes include the AP-7 motorway from Barcelona to La Jonquera, via exit 11, and the C-35 road from Granollers to Hostalric at kilometre 55. Travelling by train is also an option: Sant Celoni station is one of the key stations on Rodalies de Catalunya’s regional R11 service. The R11 connects Barcelona with Cervera de la Marenda and runs via Girona, Figueres and Portbou. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
Churches, chapels and architectural history
Sant MartĂ de PertegĂ s was the first parish church in the Sant Celoni area, until the present-day church was built. The parish church of Sant MartĂ de Sant Celoni is a fine example of Catalan Baroque architecture. La Rectoria Vella offers a different architectural feature: this Catalan Gothic manor house is arranged around a central courtyard. Temporary exhibitions are held on the ground floor.
The chapel of Sant Martà de Pertegàs stands in the garden area of La Rectoria Vella. The chapel of Sant Ponç tells another part of the area’s history: it belonged to the former leprosarium of Sant Nicolau, which stood outside the town walls. Together, these places show different aspects of the area’s past—from its former parish church to a leprosarium beyond the walls.
Routes with different planning details
The Ronda Tordera-PertegĂ s is a 7,290-metre walking route, with a stated walking time of 146 minutes. It connects the entire edge of the urban area of Sant Celoni with the Tordera River and crosses the Pont Trencat. The GR-5 is organised into stages: the tenth runs from Montseny to Sant Celoni, and the eleventh from Sant Celoni to Sant MartĂ de Montnegre. Both pass through the municipality.
The starting point for the circular route La Vall d’Olzinelles is specified as being in front of the Can Draper farmhouse. It can be reached on foot from the centre of Sant Celoni or by car. The options can therefore be distinguished by different features: the Ronda has a stated distance and walking time, the GR-5 has a sequence of stages, and La Vall d’Olzinelles has an accessible starting point.
Floodplains, valleys and the Festa Major
Les Llobateres is a restored former gravel extraction site within the municipality. It forms a floodplain landscape and a viewing point for aquatic flora and fauna in the Tordera alluvial plain. The Fuirosos Valley, one of the Montnegre’s best-known valleys, begins downstream from the settlement of La Batllòria. Much of the municipality of Sant Celoni lies in the shaded valley hollows of the Montnegre. This offers a choice between a natural area along the Tordera and the valleys of the Montnegre as distinct landscape themes.
The Festa Major of Sant Celoni also offers a cultural focus. Its activities are grouped under three main themes: Corremonts, the arts programme and popular culture.
