Collbato brings together a karst landscape shaped over thousands of years, hiking trails, organ culture and a history of olive oil. The attractions offer different highlights: one challenging circular route has a specified duration, while another trail runs between Collbató and El Bruc through olive groves and along dry-stone walls. There is also a visit focused on the Orgue de Collbató and an interpretation centre dedicated to the olive oil tradition. You can therefore plan your stay around the landscape, outdoor activities or culture.
Karst and landscape
At Cova del Salnitre, visitors can see a karst landscape up close. Over thousands of years, rainwater has shaped it in conglomerate and calcareous material. The rock material and timescale go hand in hand here: the landscape offers a tangible insight into a geological process that has unfolded over a very long time.
Two trails, different highlights
Ruta 3. Collbató - Collbató is a challenging circular route: it is 12.510 km long, reaches a maximum elevation of 1,035 m and takes 3 hours and 57 minutes. Part of the historic paved access path to the Montserrat Sanctuary has been preserved. The route thus combines its stated details with a historical connection. Both the duration and the challenging rating are important when planning your day.
The Camí de l'Oli runs from Collbató to El Bruc. It passes through olive groves and along dry-stone walls, across a rural landscape beneath the silhouette of Montserrat. The routes therefore differ in their character: a challenging loop with a specified duration is contrasted here with a trail between two places focused on olive oil.
Organ culture and local history
The first organ workshop in Collbato was founded in 1925. The Orgue de Collbató was designed and built by craftspeople from the Blancafort-Capella workshops in Collbató. The instrument has 1,545 pipes, two manual keyboards and a pedalboard. The visit “L'Orgue, el Rei dels Instruments” includes the Espai Temàtic dels Orgueners and the Blancafort organ workshop, making organ craftsmanship part of the visit too.
The Orgue de Collbató is associated with concerts featuring organ alone, as well as organ with other instruments. If you are considering attending a concert, it is best to check the current dates in advance. The “Collbató Medieval” audio guides offer another way to explore local history: they present the origins of the town, with evidence dating back more than 4,000 years.
Olive oil along the trail and at the interpretation centre
The Molí de l'Oli Interpretation Centre explains the tradition of olive cultivation and oil production in Collbató from the Middle Ages to the present day. It also introduces the vera and palomar olive varieties, which are typical of the area around Montserrat. Along the Camí de l'Oli, 16 interpretive, interactive and analogue information panels present the world of olive oil. The subject can therefore be explored in two different ways: the centre covers the history and introduces the varieties, while the panels provide information along the route.
Planning your visit
Tickets for visits to the Coves de Montserrat must be purchased in advance. Make sure to include this in your plans rather than leaving it until the day of your visit.
