The Santuari de Santa Maria de Queralt offers sweeping views across central Catalonia: it stands at an altitude of 1,200 metres and overlooks the peaks of Ripollès, the plains of Solsonès, and Montseny and Montserrat. Berga can also be discovered through its festive traditions and the history of its buildings. A trip here therefore brings together both landscapes and urban culture.
Festivals as a reason to visit—and a question of timing
The main Patum events take place every year in Berga from Wednesday to Sunday during Corpus week. As the exact dates shift with Corpus, it is worth checking that year's schedule before travelling. If you choose Berga for Patum, you can plan your trip around a clearly defined festival period.
Els Elois also has its own traditional programme. It includes a Sunday horse procession that starts at Plaça de Santa Magdalena and stops at the steps of Sant Pere for a blessing. The festival ends at Plaça Sant Joan with the traditional Ballet de Déu. Check the current year's programme before your visit. Els Elois is an old guild festival of the Confraria dels Elois, associated with the great majority of the city's guilds and professions; the guild is first recorded in 1379.
The city's history in buildings from different periods
Berga's old town dates back to the 14th century and includes architectural elements that form part of the country's historical and cultural heritage. The different periods of construction are reflected in its religious buildings: Sant Joan is a Romanesque church dating from the 13th century, with Gothic and Baroque elements added later. In its present form, the church of Sant Francesc is Neo-Gothic and is classified as a cultural asset of local interest. The Capella de la Pietat dates from the 17th century. Together, these buildings give a sense of the city's long architectural development.
The Portal de Santa Magdalena is also part of the old town's history: it is the only one of the seven former city gates in Berga that has survived. Other historical landmarks include the Fonts del Vall, a spring protected as a cultural asset of local interest, and the MolĂ de la Gratella, one of Berga's historic grain mills. Beside the Font de la Pietat there is also a medieval washhouse, with a mural depicting the history of Berga's washhouses.
Culture, nature and regional products
The Espai Berga explains the city's origins and development in relation to its strategic location. The Espai d'InterpretaciĂł de la Natura del BerguedĂ focuses on geology and palaeontology; a second exhibition room presents the BerguedĂ 's main vegetation zones and the vertebrate fauna characteristic of each. At the Casa de la Patum, visitors can learn more about the festival and see the figures that represent it. Check access arrangements before planning a visit.
Berga and the wider comarca also offer a glimpse of artisan food production: cured meats, cheese and MatĂł are made here. One specific event with a set date is the Festa dels Bolets: the 2025 edition's programme included competitions for mushroom gatherers and an exhibition of artisan and agri-food products related to the world of mushrooms. This refers to the 2025 programme; if you are planning a trip around a festival, check the latest dates.
Hiking, cycling and getting there
The CamĂ dels Bons Homes is a waymarked international long-distance trail between Berga and Foix. It is designated GR 107 and marked with red and white trail signs. Seasonal mountain conditions may affect its high-altitude sections, so check the conditions before setting out. Cycling is another activity made possible by Berga's natural surroundings. An extensive network of paths also crosses the area.
Berga can be reached from Barcelona via the C-16 road, also known as the Eix del Llobregat. You can therefore plan your trip around different interests: the dates of Patum or Els Elois, the old town's buildings, regional products or activities in the natural surroundings. Check the relevant programme dates and access information before travelling.
