Castell d'Orpí is a landmark in the town centre, while the Riera de Carme represents the wider landscape. Orpí thus offers two perspectives on a stay: the history of the town and the geography of the municipality. If you are equally interested in cultural history and landscape, the castle, river valley and Serra provide concrete themes that reveal the character of the destination.
Landscape between the Riera and the Serra
The municipality lies in the middle valley of the Riera de Carme; the river runs through its centre from west to east. To the south lies the Serra de Feixes, also known as Serra d'Orpinell. This ridge, formed from Eocene limestone, reaches 737 metres and lies on the border with the municipality of La Llacuna and the comarca of Alt Penedès. The valley, ridge and regional border therefore stand out as clearly distinct reference points.
The municipality's terrain is mountainous and rugged. Scrubland and degraded shrub formations cover 45 per cent of the area; forests account for 14 per cent.
There are eleven paper mills along the Riera de Carme; four of them are within the municipality of Orpí. The difference between the total number along the river and Orpí's share helps distinguish the local perspective from that of the entire river landscape. As industrial heritage, the mills add another connection to the Riera to the landscape.
The castle and parish church in the town centre
Castell d'Orpí is in the town centre and is the first building you encounter on arrival. It is therefore a clear landmark for the historic part of the town. The Romanesque parish church of Sant Miquel d'Orpí is attached to the castle, so the two named buildings are directly connected.
The first documented records of the castle date from 987. A six-sided polygonal tower is all that remains of the complex.
Honey traditions and local events
The Fira de les Bresques originated as a traditional gathering held to promote honey from beekeepers in the surrounding area. The programme for the edition held on 26 April 2026 in Santa Càndia, Orpí, included a honey tasting and an exhibition of crafts related to beekeeping. The honey tradition is reflected both in the area's beekeepers and in the crafts associated with beekeeping.
Another recurring event is Orpí's Festa Major, held at the end of September. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the current programme before making plans.
